Jarred, since you're in a posting mood...
Could you put the mattebox and follow focus on the basic production package to see what that would look like?

Being a bit pedantic now, but will the production pieces be a matching matte dark grey/black the same as the body in the final production?

Heck yeah. I'm glad to see that the rod converter still exists; I'm gonna need it for my mattebox, too. This really does look phenomenal.
I'm really happy those side bars (with the mounting holes) come standard with the premium pack. It means that if the camera is ever tipped over on a table or on the ground (or heaven forbid it falls - but we all know this happens), it's severely protected on the sides. That will definitely be the setup I purchase!

Brook Willard
07-17-2007, 04:55 PM
Mattebox looks like the Arri MB-20 II to me. The follow focus is harder... maybe a FF-5HD? Looks a little "squarer" than that... FF-4?

Hahah... yeah I figured as much Brook :-). It is just that everything that I am doing right now consists of outdoor wildlife/fishing shows. I have not done any extensive G&E since my accident in feb of 2001, before that we did everything on a national (many major clients 3 ton/10 ton G/E and all the toys) scale except for narrative work. Now that I am back on my feet (literally) and I am moving into a decent loft (almost done--looks great), I have some space that I can do some tabletop/greenscreen work (400 sq ft of outlined, workable "studio space" that then becomes my den/seating area/client pit -- ceiling is 14ft). I hope to put together a nice modular studio/travel kit consisting of kinos, source 4s, dedo 650s and possibly a lite panel kit to go with my small studio tungsten pack/ c-stands etc. Then rent hmis or a truck when needed. Just looking for inspiration, it has been a while and I am anxious to be a studio rat again ;-)
Cheers-Benz

Thanks for the love Poi Boy. I don't believe I oohhed or ahhed and as you know when it comes to lighting there are many paths. I am not even close to being a lighting noob, I thought I made my reasoning clear in the post above. Now imagine if you can- if YOU were flat on your back for almost four years needing surgery and you were completely unable to do what you love while you slowly lost everything... I do not understand your bs hostility, I am 38 and not some noob kid. Thanks for the put down though, I am sure you feel a little taller.

I'm just frustrated that I'm always having to see into the dark to see detail on Red because Jarrad likes to make art. All I'm asking is for a fully lit image of the fucking camera, while we are at it, some moving images of the high asa charts. Not that much to ask.

We have one setup in the corner upstairs that we shoot when we have time. Everyone is running around like mad to get things done. We just haven't had time to even shoot all the possible options, let alone change the setup. We live in a mess because we don't have time to clean up. Our web guy needs about 20 new pics he isn't getting. We are trying to finish the camera and satisfy as many requests as possible. But getting the camera done is mission #1.
I'm sorry if we can't do everything you guys want us to do. It isn't because we are being coy. We just don't have enough manpower to do it all.
Our apologies.

Well then there you have it. First off, you are frustrated and full of it and there is no need to act like that. Since I was the only one discussing the lighting set up you can see how I might misinterpret your frustration over the lighting of the pics. The "Life is a bitch" comment was assinine. But I will do you one better and do so without bullshit or crass sarcasm...
Poi Boy, I am really very sorry about your wife. I wish you nothing but hope/love for you and your family and I will keep you and your wife in my thoughts and prayers. I may just be a southern boy who is a nobody, but I am sincere.
Being or feeling in a place that is bereft of Hope is something that I do not wish on anyone because I lived it. I am sorry if you were offended.
EDIT* Poi, I see your post below, thank you and accepted. I really do wish there was something that we as a community could do for you, I am just deeply sorry my man. Now, I am not going to ask to see your lighting set up ;-) but I do look forward to seeing the beautiful images that you make with your REDS. On the outside chance, if there is anything that I can ever do for you -if I can I will- just ask-- I mean it. Cheers mate-- Andrew

Jim, I have been in awe of everything you have accomplished with such a small group. And I understand you can only do so much.
Because many of us have been on this great ride with you since the beginning.... And we have a lot more invested in Red than just Money. We have invested our time, spirit and passion. And being so vested, in our excitement we can loose sight of all the balls you guy's have to juggle.
Thanks for all your efforts.
In the end, I think we all going to miss the excitement and comradeship this development process has generated. Now that the camera's will be here soon...... We can all channel this good energy into the projects will be shooting with our Red's.

It's not over, it'll never be over. We have 4K projectors and displays to look forward to, not to mention the inevitable camera upgrades. Red are going to go far and this is only the beginning! You know, as smart as we all are, I don't think even we realize the full potential that Jim could have on the industry as a whole. Will he "change everything"? I doubt it. Will have have one of the largest impacts on the equipment side of hollywood in the last decade? I believe he will.
Think about this: Kids in college will be able to practice and learn on the SAME camera they will use as pros years later.. Think of the amazing experience and hours they will bring to the table.
We're nearing the end of July, photos are showing up on this site almost daily. Jim and Co are clearly happy with the progress and playing with the camera like crazy. They are throwing them in the hands of directors and camerapeople like there's no tomorrow, and the reactions are WONDERFUL.
The final hurdle, IMHO will be support on the back end. Given that the cameras are already putting in some hours out there with no apparent problems, I would say that part is cool. Now all he needs are enough replacement parts and the ability to get them onto the sets quickly and he will have it.
I have so enjoyed watching all this happen. It's been a lot of fun.

The rails are much tighter and more usefull than the ones we have seen at the NAB.
I think its pretty close to perfekt.
Maybe the top handles could be a bit more flexible.
But I know, we haven't seen anything yet.
Great, great job. I'm realy stoked.

So did it go back to what it used to be with the flat cage with mounting holes? That was always my favorite set up. But then the flat mounting parts became grips and then it was all changed completely again to "hanging" grips. Now it's back to flat?

You can do either the flat grips for mounting or the "handle grips" for flying...

This has already been answered several times in the thread. The mattebox is an Arri MB-20 II and the follow focus appears to be an Arri FF-4.
RED has not announced any mattebox or follow focus units. They have announced that they will make lens motors and a wired control system [the Supergrip] at some point, but no dates or details have been provided.
