Hi,
We are shooting with our Red One on 320GB Red Hard Drive. But we are facing frame drop issues whenever we are doing a steadycam or a car rig and sometimes even on a trolley.
We have two drives and both are having same issues. But when we are shooting on 16GB CF cards everything is okay.

Any suggestions on this will be really appreciated..

Thks

Harcharan

The drive is a spinning media - and is susceptible to dropping frames when it's trying to record and you're moving it around.

Ideally you'd want to look at using solid state media when you go to steadicam or car rig/tracking shots. If you don't have CF cards, I suppose the only way around the issue is to insulate the drive as best you can when in these situations - the more you can protect it from bumps and vibrations, the less likely you are to drop frames.

Check the cable connecting the drive to the camera.I had drop frames issues with a damaged cable.

If you have to go Red Drive for those shots, follow Shawn's advice and get the Element Technica drive mounts. Works very well.

If you need a solution today, you can easily improvise - by suspending the drive in some cloth (molton), and/or take out the rails in the cradle, put a strip on cloth on both ends of the drive and slip it back in.

Long term solution would be to get the Element Technica mount.

I have had this problem, and the best solution for me was to wrap the drive in lots of foam and isolate it as much as possible form any vibration, generally get the drive away from the camera or any solid object. A faulty cable to the drive can also cause drop frames.

Yes, please make sure you check your cables AND have back up cables on hand - ALONG WITH:

Also consider having RED checkout the drive, could be a bad controller in the drive.
