Went to abel cine in Burbank yesterday to check out the phantom HD for something I'm shooting soon... Asked them if they were going to be getting a red (maybe a stupid question in hindsight), she said "NO..HA, We only have real cameras" (don't quote me on that quote.. it was similar but maybe not exact). She said the camera didn't exist and I then began to inform her that I have indeed seen, held, and viewed through the camera and have also seen the short film created by Peter Jackson using the RED ONE... it was at this point I could make out the bitchy sour face which was forming on her mug...She said so u have the camera? I said mine wont be coming until december..she said "sounds like the story with most people.. no one has the camera yet"..
anyways.. I couldn't wait to get out of able and laugh.
Long story short.. phantom costs in the mid 2000s to rent..
Ill still use for highspeed.. but they are freaked out because they understand that a better camera will lessen the value of their equipment.

I deal with Abel Cine quite often here in NYC for sales usually but they are one of my "Go to" people for certain gear and rentals. I had mentioned RED camera to them about 6 months ago and they were interested but still too early to tell and when I was in there last week and mentioned RED again they seemed much more interested naturally. I filled them in on some of the recent news thats surfacing and they seemed excited about it over all and said while RED will not let them sell RED cameras, they were looking into selling accessories or perhaps 3rd party gear for red (Dont quote on that either, just small chat).
Its does bug me though at this point in the game people refuse to accept that its a real tangible working piece of hardware. Even one of my own producers will drop the line "It does not exist" ....I dont even argue anymore, just patiently waiting. ;)
anyways.. I couldn't wait to get out of able and laugh.
Why wait?

Next time, you should bet her a day of Phantom rental that Red will deliver in time ;)
I am looking forward to quite a few people buying me drinks soon...

Also, I guess we need to feel compassion for poor souls who invested a fortune into something that may never return a profit.

i can see her POV ... many have been in the business a LONG time ... they have seen lots of equipment before their very own eyes that never made it to shipping ( market) ... so until RED ships to buyers it's all just gossip to them = prototypes being tested !!

it was more her attitude than her POV.. she was a B

A well respected DP here in NYC was asked about his opinions on the Red. He said at this point he didn't have any. Tomorrow, he can go out and shoot with a 435, F900, Genesis, D20, etc, but not the Red. As soon as it arrives, he'll be more than happy to comment, but for someone that is extremely busy with the demands of production, I can understand where he is coming from. You must focus on the work and tools currently in front of you. Anything else will be given attention when its time comes, but not until then.
This isn't saying this DP's comment came from the same place as the Abel lady's. However, it's what I would consider a practical response from the other side of the debate.

Like I said.. I dont care if people have their doubts because A. they dont go to professional tradeshows such as nab. B. dont read magazines.. Or C. get with the times... Thats all fine if they dont believe in the camera.. Thats why I have one coming and they dont.. The problem was the attitude.. Its almost a HATE attitude

Unless those DP's can get to California and get an audience
with RED that is about all they can say. I guess that is why
RED changed up the home page to showcase the opinions
of some noteworthy talented DP's and Directors. I guess Jim
needs to find some heavy hitters from the NYC area next.

Abel may not be happy if they have a few too many guys like me in the qeue. I had a lease set up based on a quote for an XDCAM from Abel but at the last minute put the lease execuation on hold to wait for RED. They don't like losing sales.

Jim doesn't need to find 'em - we've got 'em all lined up.
NYC is about to become the big RED Apple.
And for the record, I was with Rich and Pete Abel last week, specifically discussing some support gear we want to purchase for our RED's and checking out the Phantom - and while I will not speak for them, they don't share the same opinions as their staff member in LA. Abel is a CLASS outfit - I ONLY work with them (and CSC for specific glass) -

FWIW, I spoke with someone at Abel's outfit in LA a couple months ago, just getting all the details on Phantom availability, pricing, shipping to my locations out of state, etc... Anyway RED came up in that discussion and the guy I was talking to was very interested in RED and seemed positive that Abel will be offering RED rentals at some point early next year. So just because you have one Doubting Deloris working there, doesn't mean she represents all of their employees.

She probably has to field questions on Red all day long and is already pissed off with talking about it.

How can you "almost" have a hating attitude?
What does that mean? Mild indigestive attitude towards the RED? Ambivalence? Teenage Angstiness?

I think she was just having a bad day.. id be supprised if her actions towards the red one spoke for the entire company.. im sure the head guys have interest

When we needed a Phantom for a shoot here in AZ we checked out Able Cine.
They kinda a flaked on us so we went to Dalsa, and those guys were a real help, total class act.. Got the camera DIT and a full set of cooke primes. I can't say enough good things about the Dalsa people.

Why would you be looking to rent a Phantom if the Dalsa fit your needs? They serve two entirely different purposes.

We needed the Phantom for a High speed shoot. Dalsa rents one, They rent more than just their 4K camera.
