Is it currently possible for the RED to change to the windowed mode on the VF or LCD while still recording 4K?
Two workflow issues:
1. If this can be done quickly it is another way to check critical focus on a target which is more or less in center.
2. This would make it possible to shoot doco etc. in 4K when needing more tele. just switch to windowed viewfinder now the wider lens is seeing a restricted field of view like going to doubler on an HD lens. If you later want larger field of view it would still be there. It would be nice if the RED put data on these segments telling post that the framing was for the windowed area.
ps: this idea came out of the first meeting of the "Rain City REDs" in Seattle this week.

Thanks TJ. I forgot to post about this. I think this could be an extremely useful feature, especially if it were a one button click kind of option.

sounds similar to panasonic's focus assist feature on the hvx-200 except they occupy about 1/3 of the frame with the blown up (1:1 pixel) image.
i'll go one further...what about a 50% opacity mode for the blown up focus check so we can see both simultaneously. that way it's also obvious that the vf or lcd are in assist mode.

I'm pretty sure Stuart confirmed 1:1 cropping will be possible for focus in a recent thread.

The original idea we discussed at the Seattle Reduser Meeting wasn't so much about focus assist, it was more about not throwing away data. You are framing for the s16 2k window but still recording the 4k image.
Say you are shooting a doc and something starts happening really fast but is a little far away and you only have the 18-50mm lens on the camera. You could press a button and switch the vf into windowed mode to punch in on the action but still record the whole 4k area.

dead on! The focus use is nice also but the big deal here is what Mike is saying. still shooting 4K seeing center tagging data. The dimming doesn't work as we would have the window small in the VF.

Yes, we support that.

Funny you should post this question TJ.
I was thinking the same thing this morning whilst pondering lens options...
That's really quite useful thanks Stuart.

Thanks Stuart. I think this is a great alternative for a lot of ENG Low Budget Production etc. It's great to know that it's available. With the new ASA's of up to 4000!!! that are available, I'll have the option of buying a pretty big range zoom in 35mm still format. As it won't have to be fast, and adjusting to the windowed VF mode will allow me to have the effect of a doubler.
Stuart, will RED also support tagging media when the VF is windowed during 4K recording, as on one of the posts above?

That is not in the current spec, but it is a really good idea ...
