Today i have been testing the RED 18-85 Pro Zoom, which i have to say i really like and it offers excellent value for money.

I have a problem at the moment we have tried an FF5 which fits, but its a bit of a pain with the Gear Arm lock.

The FF3 (19mm Version) simply does not fit as it touches the gear teeth. has anyone else encountered this, is there a remedy that you now of/

I will be trying an FF4 later today to see happens there.

Any thoughts

Also we are testing the RED Primes which are really well built, I have had them in our test room and comparing them with ULTRAS, MASTERS and S4's

Will let you know what we think.

FF4 works fine as it has the deeper cutout to allow for the large diameter lenses:

Need some clarification, what level of support does the 18-85mm Red Pro Zoom require on a Red One?

Paul is there any support other then the follow focus to the lens?

Just trying to understand best practice.

Thanks David

The FF is not a lens support.

But yes, the RED 18-85 mm needs a support. I have the one from Duclos and an Arri LS-9 and I'm very happy with this solution.

We used the Optitek support which uses the Red Universal Mount as its base.

Arri has been dealing with this problem for years go to a high end rental house like CSC, clairmont and otto nemetiz and the solution for the bigger zooms have been using a cooke gear in place of the prime gear. The pitch is the same but the gear is similar in shape and size to a quarter so it pushes the arm further away givin you the space to mesh the gears. Chroziel makes a similar gear. also with the ang. 10-102hp you cant even put the ff under the focus barrel so you have to put it way far back like under ther the zoom barrel so the older bigger houses tend to have a gear on an arm by itself with a piston lke extention that attaches to the ff so you can operate the ff. In the end Panavision is really the only system where your not going to have use alot of bracketry and move the follow focus around as you use different lenses. They made their system to stay in one place. This is one of the biggest reasons AC's prefer the pana system. Using multiple lenses with multiple manufacters means your always going to encounter this problem. The morale fo the story always give a checkout so your not stuck on set when these problems happen. Good luck.
