Hello,

i have a question regarding the "POST" process in the camera after ending a recording to the red drive. what is actually happening in this moment?

i have been recording a classical concert last summer with two reds (build 16) and after each set which lasted 1hour the "post process" seemed to take endless - but i guess it was one minute in real time ;-)

if the post process would fail or the camera would hang in this process - would the whole take be affected or only the "last chunk" of *.r3d file?

i am asking because we are preparing a multiple red concert shoot this fall and one rental company wants to tell the producer the red is not reliable enough ... and i want to avoid having hdcam decks recording the hd-sdi out of each red ;-)

thanks in advance - best wishes,
martin

Martin,

The "POST" process create the Quicktime "proxies" files every time you finished recording. These files, located within the same folder of your .r3d file, can be played with Quicktime player. If you recorded an hour of footage non-stop, it may not be surprised if it took that long to create those files. You may want to disable this process by going to the MENU>SYSTEM>PROJECT and unchecked the QT Proxies. You can create these proxies through RedAlert - a free software from Red if you want them later.

There are now literally thousands of titles being shot on Red. Shoot on Red, you will not regret this. Lim

The post process is main when the camera writes the Quicktime wrappers.

Generating the wrappers on long takes is actually quite a bit of work so if you're ok with generating the wrappers in post, I'd highly recommend turning the quicktime wrappers off.

Lim, Deanan,

thanks a lot for clarifying!

Second question ;-)

If the camera runs out of power during recording a long take split to multiple *.r3d files - do i loose the whole take or just the last 2GB chunk of *.r3d?

not that i want to practice this kind of workflow, just to understand technically...

best wishes,
martin

Will turning off the QT Proxies in camera prevent locking during the 'post' operation? we have had this happen several times now and producers are starting to ask questions..
