This has been going on for 40 years or so. Nice idea but I don't think it's Paul Moller that's going to do this:

Besides, I don't think the government would let this happen until there's a really safe and controllable way to do it. Imagine an accident in one of these. How do you do a hard stop when you need to.

LOL! And take his "investors" with him too...

I would have expected the M400 to be the more likely candidate for commercial development. They were practically ready to sell ;)

my first thougt seeing this car was, who is going to get pelted by all the
turblulance and debris all those rotors kick up as it flys just 10 feet up

I think we will see "skycars" in a couple decades. but the question is, how do
you regulate traffic? I see it like the Futurerama open, everyone has a flying car....in flying gridlock

I still want one. I have a lousy commute. :)

Air car? Post 9/11?

That must be some seriously optimistic investors.

9/11 or not, the FAA would have to govern all traffic (in the U.S.). While in the air, they are no longer "cars" but aircraft. As such, the drivers need to be qualified pilots.

Well the article does mention that below 10ft, FAA doesn't apply.. I believe these cars only fly 10ft or so. So perfect for vertical overtakes and evading those big black SUV's that tend to follow you round town :shiftyph34r::help:

250 lb. weight capacity? Damn, I was going to switch my RED deposit over to see if I could get #67. :)

In all seriousness, the skycar's time will come, but it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Is it just me or is it stupid how the prop's are exposed.. I mean, the setup could easily be done as a vertical takeoff jet type configuration. Newtons third law and all. I just find it uncomfortable thinking that thing could land on someone's head... Tarentino would approve.

What do you bet that the FAA would extend down to 4 feet if something like this really came out? Perhaps the reason they don't govern 10 feet and below is because there really isn't anything that flys at 10 feet today. Once there is I'll bet they'll find a way to govern it. This could just lead to too much chaos once there are a lot of them flying around and crashing into things. Who will insure these things? What will the premiums be? Will house insurance come to have waivers against damage by an "uninsured motorist flying car" because that's likely to become common too.

Unless they can come up with a super power source and have an electromagnetic levitation method, I doubt this idea is very doable as this kind of turbo fan type car just can't be as finely controllable as you really need it to be (and stoppable too).

Oh, that's sooo funny. I was there doing a shoot for discovery channel canada not six months ago. We showed up and nothing was working at all. there was almost nothing to shoot. At one point the dude got into the flying car and the producer pushed the vehicle into frame to make it look like it was moving for a b roll shot AH-HAHAHAHHA. That was such a lame shoot. :)

It comes with it's own boat anchor! Myself I'm holding out for a good jetpack :gun:

And exactly why wouldnt it be able to do hard stops?

Doesn't anyone of you wonder who's supposed to fly things like this? I mean it's really expensive, at the beginning. So Paris Hilton is definately going to get one...think about it...Paris Hilton in a heavy flying car with a couple of meat grinders as engines...or even worse, Lindsay Lohan...my hands are shaking...I need a hairnet...at least some kind of protection for my head...
