View Full Version : A Call Out To All The REDHEADS

Sam Druckerman

Hey Friends,

I've been thinking about the LART and how these guy's are donating all there time and equipment, many of them will have traveling expenses, etc.

And I'm asking all the Redheads to join in with me in by pledging a small donation to cover the cost of food for the team.

Wouldn't it be great if these guy's didn't have to spend any of there own money for food?

And even better, what if we raised enough money to have it catered? Then they could focus on the test's, and not on cooking.

If everyone just threw $20.00 bucks in the hat we could raise enough to cover it. Or do what you can, $10 or $5...

There's a lot of us who are going to benifit from the test, if we all pitch in a little, we'll get there.

Maybe gibby can set up a pay-pal account, or we could just mail him a check... What ever Gibby prefers.

But to get the things started,

I'm pledging $100.00 to the cause.

Let's show these guy's how much we appreciate them with our $upport.

Thanks!

How about we each take $20 and send some USO care packages to some soldiers in Iraq.

Lets show these guys some support. Something this administration has forgotten.

Peter Jackson did the camera test for me.

If everyone just threw $20.00 bucks in the hat we could raise to enough to cover it.

$20 x 3283 users = $65,660 / 17,500 = 3.752. Forget food that almost covers the 4 RED cameras. :usd:

Hey Sam,

That is an incredible offer, I for one (as I am sure all the other LART members do as well) greatly appreciate it. Thank you Sam very much and I hope I can buy you a pint or two... ;-)

Cheers,

Sam is a good guy, and it comes as no surprise to me that he is looking to help these guys out. I will await details on where we can send the donation. I think it is a great idea. These tests that Gibby's team will conduct are going to provide incredibly important real world data to us.

Fightordie, I can't completely agree with you about the Peter Jackson test. Yes, it gave us confidence that the camera is for real, but in all fairness to Red, those were not production cameras and some things have changed from those prototypes. I was impressed as hell by the footage, but the test these guys will be conducting will be with production models and that is huge for us.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind words and your support!

I have to agree with you about the importance of the tests.

And all of us with a reservation are going to benefit from the feedback we get from these guys.

Thank you Sam for the generous gesture...much appreciated!

Me and Ken Corben have gladly committed to producing the LART testing. Everyone, including the studio we're testing at and the testing team members are donating their time, facilities, cameras, and accessories to the testing. Even after that, there are still a few hard costs, such as food, that need to be covered.

I've also received a few PMs from individuals who are interested in pitching in for a food budget for the team. Each of those offers, including yours Sam, is very much appreciated! We will gladly accept donations for our food budget. I'll confer with Ken Corben on what way to best handle sending in donations and then we'll post our recommendation here.

The team members who're not from the L.A. area are paying for their own travel to L.A. and their own lodging. All team members are donating their time and the use of their cameras, lenses, computers, and accessories, so having their meals covered by donations will then be something we don't have to ask them to personally come up with. That will be very cool...

That's great Gibby, thanks.

Exactly why I hope everyone here on the board who can, will pitch in and together we can hopefully provide a caterer.

so having their meals covered by donations will then be something we don't have to ask them to personally come up with. That will be very cool...

Yes! VERY COOL!

I know I don't post that often, but trust me when I say I'm here everyday learning from everyone....

Because of that, I feel a strong sense of community here at Reduser..... This board is made up of some really amazing people. People that are talented, generous, and of strong character.

And that's why I believe as "fellow Red fellows" we can all "Rise to the Occasion" and support this terrific team Gibby has assembled.

Let's not just hope the other guy's will "Take Care of it". And let's not just be takers... when the reports of the test start coming in and we all rush to learn and benefit from our friends labor.

But rather, let's take pride in knowing we all helped a little bit by simply pitching in a few bucks to feed this deserving crew, that by all practical purposes are working for the rest of us.

I know we can do it!

Gotta' say this community is a class act. What a great idea. Gibby and I, as producers of LART, were looking at passing the hat to LART members for Subway platters and Pizza Hut as the second meal since the days are gonna be looooong...

The goal is now catered lunch and dinner with craft service for 20+ participants over two days.

Contributions can be sent via paypal to my kcorben@yahoo.com account
OR
checks payable to Seaflix and mailed to
7336 Santa Monica Blvd, Suite 701
Hollywood, CA 90046

As co-producer with Gibby for LART, I will manage responsibility of accepting contributions for feeding the LART team, provide updates on this thread, and close contributions when the financial goal is met (waiting on quotes from caterers).

Nice work REDUSER community - thanks,

Sharky

BTW - It's important to remind the REDUSER community that Gibby and I as co-producers (and nobody else for that matter) are seeking to make any profit from the LART sessions, and that the results of the testing will be posted for free.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Ken or Gibby can shed some light on that.... and keep us posted on our progress.

Sam,

Thanks for stepping up to the plate with the original idea and first contribution. I can see that with #81 (lucky bum) you're gonna' be very interested in the LART information that Gibby provides on reduser.

I have only gotten one caterer quote thus far. The ball park seems to be $15 to $25 per head per meal plus 18% gratuity. That's catered with all ancillary items, drinks and service. Of course I will negotiate, but the minimum target at this point is $1600 for 2 meals (lunch/dinner) drinks and snacks for 25 team members for 2 days.

I'll post the progress and details on this thread.

Again - nice work Sam - thanks,

Sharky

I will say that this will be expensive, but the opportunity to meet all these incredibly talented people and being able to show the story behind the results (and much more!!!) for all the great members of this forum will be priceless for me. I am working to make this a very quick turn around with teasers being released as fast as I can edit and render. All of this will of course be free as a small thank you to everyone here. Gibby and Ken will determine the final avenues of web distro, but if the past is any indication-- many members here will offer to mirror.

Update #1

I am not posting names of contributors since I believe the spirit is more important than the credit on this and also cuz I believe that $10 is to one what $100 is to an other in this diverse reduser community.

By close of business West Coast day 1

$250
$100
$100
$50
$20
$20

Total = $540 (minus Paypal fees)

That is over 1/4 of the way to the average bid I'm getting from vendors here in LA (see attached PDF). So if $10 paypal is what you can contribute then press the buttons. Nice work guys.

BTW - I am personally "insuring" your contributions. If your "Grandmother needs surgery" and you need a refund before I spend the money for LART then just let me know by email or PM.

Our goal is $2,294.80 based on the references and quality of the mid-range bidder 24hr Production Catering (revised bid attached). Note: this revised bid is a few hundred dollars more than their original bid posted earlier because it was breakfast/lunch not lunch/dinner. Gibby and I discussed the call times and hours for LART and it is obvious that with partial night shoots and the LART 4 camera agenda that a second meal (dinner) was more important than providing breakfast.

Thanks again to everyone, this will beat the original Subway/Pizza Hut plan hands down.

Thanks for your support of the testing team on this!

We've all been on sets/locations where we dreaded meal time because the food sucked. As a producer/director I've always believed and practiced a philosophy where we went the extra mile to make sure the crew had tons of water, good food, and as much creature comfort as possible. I remember so many productions in my career, when I was working as a DP or cinematographer, where I felt the producers simply didn't take good care of the crew. I've always believed that a crew that is well fed and feels that the producers and director really care about their comfort and conditions, will have a good attitude and bust their asses to do good work.

As producers of LART, we could have brought in very basic short order food for the testing team. But I've been so impressed by these guys willingness to donate their time, talents, equipment, travel expense, and lodging expense to be a part of LART, that when Sam and others suggested a "food drive" to feed the team well, I thought it was a great idea for team morale - and it is exactly in line with my (and Ken's) philosophy for thoughtful care for our normal production crews.

A heartfelt "thanks" for your generosity on this...

OK, I may sound like a nutjob here but to be honest my condition has not improved in years! So I have to deal with it.

I tend to believe a happy and well taken care for crew is a better performing and more inspired crew.

To this day I've only done SFX stuff so it's usually a bunch of guys sitting in front of PCs all day and night long. So I usually cook for everyone and we are having a great time.
I order a 5lb tuna fillet and simillar amounts of salmon and other healthy food stuff and I take a half hour break earlier than everyone else and cook up everything from raw ingredients. Usually it's sushi and chinese so about ten to five minutes before our planned lunch break everyone just starts rounding up what they are doing as the smells are killing them and when we are done eating we can usually go at it for just as long.

I have managed to get a crew of 6 to work for 5 days straight without one minute of sleep or half a complaint. Only taking one hour breaks every 6 to 8 hours to stretch out a bit and get something to eat.

Feed your crew well and they'll make you proud!

I think this idea is a good one by the way and I thought it worth mentioning that if for any reason anyone should have any misgivings about donating money to this (Especially when there are obviously places in around the world that require donations on a daily basis), then think of it from the point of view of good business.

Twenty peoples time and equipment would typically cost a great deal more, and information gathered in such a manner is often kept relatively guarded so by lending a hand in such a way you will be doing yourself a favour when it comes to educating others about your own equipment, because you'll have more information at your disposal (and money left in your wallet) than if you tried to conduct the tests on your own.

And if you still should have any misgivings then I reckon make a donation to a charity of your choice in the spirit of it all!!! :)

I just put in my contribution... and bear in mind that:

1. I am too broke to buy a Red, was even too broke to put down the $1000 reservation when they announced it...
2. Even though I'm in LA, I'm not even on the VIP list for the club...

Come on, if I can do it, everyone else can... seriously, all of your guys rubbing your hands together talking about how much you're going to rent this sucker out for, the LART will be a huge benefit to you!

One of the reasons I chose NOT to try buy a Red was because I thought it more important to have funds to pay people who help me for their time. I didn't want to be the guy with the fancy camera trying to slime everyone into working for me for free. If that meant I had to reduce the camera budget to a frikkin' HV20 with 35mm adapter, so be it.

Anyway, contribute and prove me wrong guys. Show us you value paying people for their work more than your camera... seriously, if they help you make just a single informed purchasing decision, your contribution just paid for itself.

Ah well, I think I'm going to fly to South Africa during the whole of September so I won't have to gnash my teeth thinking of you guys all testing Reds down the road from me.

Steve and Gibby, when we do the LART for the Red Mini, please put me on the guest list, okay? ;)

Wow, I feel bad for dropping the ball on this initially. I meant to contribute earlier and then got caught up in my selfish world. :)

I think it's a great thing Sam has done and of course a great thing that the LART is doing. How could I not chip in?

One universal truth of filmmaking: "You can overwork us and underpay us, but don't underfeed us"

I hope that the LART eats well and futhermore it would be nice to see some of their costs covered as well. This is something that will, without doubt, bring huge benefits to this community.

I would hope that if people could put down a couple thousand on the camera that they would be willing to put in a bit for this great team.

Like a lot of people, I am a bit broke right now (damn real estate market), but I will dedicate to put in some more money if the numbes don't keep climbing.

Thanks to you all,

Jason

Totally support what you guys are doing.. so early on, helping so many future users. It's really appreciated. Really wish I could be there.

c'mon people.. this kind of early insight into what the cameras can do is going to cost you a lot more that $20 to do yourself.

Have fun!!... ;)

Hey, friends have you ever had the feeling "Everyone in the room Knows something you don't?".

I hate that feeling... & sadly I know it to well. LOL.

Gibby, tried to send me a few hints early in the thread, but I didn't catch on until I read his post today...

And thanks again from the LART team for everyone's thoughtful consideration on this...and especially to Sam and Donatello for originally suggesting the concept of a fund drive for this...much appreciated by the LART team!

And with a quick search, I discovered the Talented, Hard Working, Truly Nice Guy, Red Fellow and Reduser, "Donatello" was thinking about a fund raiser a few days before I started this thread.

Hmmm, "Great Minds Think Alike". ( I kid )

The details of how I missed that are to boring to list here, but I want to say that it was an honest oversight on my part.

And I've already sent Don a PM with a apology.

But, I wanted to make a post here and say that Donatello is a Rock Star! And the fact he never mentioned anything about it to me, says it all!

Thanks Don for putting that good energy out there.

Now in the spirit of the thread...

I say "Onwards and Upwards!"

Sam Druckerman

Glenn, Jamie, Jason & Flameop!

Right on!

Every little bit does help and I don't want anyone feeling bad.... I understand everyones busy, so thanks for taking the time.

Your support is much appreciated.

Steve, thanks for the follow through....

And like the "The Little Engine That Could".....

"I think we can, I think we can..."

There have been contributions made by some preferring to stay anonymous. So.....

Thanks To Everyone Who Has Chipped In.

For anyone who might be on the fence.....

How do we put a value on all the great info we'll be getting from the LART?

Two thousand Reds have been reserved.

A basic Red package is still going to be $20K

For perspective... 1/10 of 1% of Twenty Thousand Dollars = $20 bucks.

Hmmm, just 1/10th of 1%.

If it's really tough, make it $10 or $5...

"Do the right thing". It's better than a sleeping pill.

Sam, no apology needed ... i never thought of fundraising ... i was thinking about how to get a free lunch to the LART team but no how to do it ...you came up with the idea of a fundraiser !! = team effort = free lunch for our LART team !!!
we all tip our hats to you for this thread ...

Hi Phaz,

if we were smart, we would do like the nascar guys and sell ad space on the
LART cameras to cover the costs....then again if someone like Eynzite whats
to put a sticker on....

Unfortunately, adds are not a good idea for the LART. They, the LART will be free of any obligation to anyone or any product by doing it themselves.

That's why I started this thread...

So we as redusers could support them the "LART", that support us... "redusers".

I still think the idea of everyone pitching in is the right one...

And on that note, for people just coming on to thread, here's how you can make a donation (without having to search the thread).

Contributions can be sent via paypal to my kcorben@yahoo.com account

So, ok, its boring Paypal (takes a few days).

Steve Gibby

LOL Paul :)

Actually, I've known Jim Jannard for years, and the cool thing about him is that even though he's wealthy, in my experience, he doesn't flaunt it. He hangs out in T shirts and jeans, and if he passed you on the street or beach, you'd never know he was wealthy. I really respect that in him...

If you were a cigar expert, and he walked by you, you'd probably guess that he was wealthy though...he smokes real good cigars!

Jim is a really cool, down-to-earth person...he just worked very hard and did really well in business.

Shooting good photographic images has been his passion for decades, so his RED project came as no surprise to those that know him.

LOL. You wouldn't know it to look at me now... but as a kid growing up in the country, racing motocross, I can relate to "no sense of danger".

I was your basic Nut-Job teenager "adrenaline junkie" who thought he was bullet proof.... till one day when I was 16, standing in the H.S. parking lot and truck ran me over from behind doing a about twenty + mph.

Soooo, watch your back.

Hi there, is there another way to donate besides paypal? For some strange reason I can't access my account. I want to be able to brag about how I helped fund the LART! :P

I think this is only the right thing to do as a part of this community, the least we can do really after all the work and resources going into the LART! And we're exactly the ones that will benefit the most from the results, so... it's a no-brainer!

Thanks.

See, I am a certified skiing instructor and I do particullarly well with little kids in groups of 10-20 :)
But when it comes to watching out for myself...
Over the past 5 years I have made a habit out of finding myself embedded in some rather awkward positions on the front windshield of public transportation vehicles.
Though while the alleged bus was speeding considerably all three times, I got out of it with only a few bruises.
Running across the street, got hit by a bus and then kept going my way... make of that what you will.

Thanks for keeping us up to date, Sharky.

Well, we're almost there. And for those who have been meaning to pitch in, but haven't.

It's not to late (yet), to show your $upport to a great crew who have volunteered to work like dogs, donate there own equipment, pay there own traveling and hotel expenses, to test everything possible in 2 days!

Just so they can come back here to reduser, and Share all that great info with US.

There will be thousands of redusers who will benefit from the results, jamming the boards with questions, and singing there (LART) praises. The threads will be some of the longest we've ever had on reduser. It's going to Very Exciting, and FUN!

But if you decide to donate a few bucks to this food fund, you won't be just "taking and using" all that terrific info.....

But instead, you will have "the satisfaction of knowing you really helped out". How do you put a price on that?

To make it easy, here's how to make a donataion....

BTW - It's important to remind the REDUSER community that Gibby and I as co-producers (and nobody else for that matter) are seeking to make any profit from the LART sessions, and that the results of the testing will be posted for free.

Thanks!

Thank you to all of you guys who stepped up and contributed to this fund drive. We're almost to our goals on it! Also, thanks again to Sam and Donatello for bringing up the concept, and to Sam for being the ringleader of the effort. As co-producers of LART me and Ken Corben are pulling the many strings to make LART happen, but it is the efforts of the other LART team members, and guys like Sam and Donatello, and all you guys who kindly donated to help feed the team, that will know that you helped keep the LART team fed on the testing days - so they can concentrate on creating some of the feedback on shipping RED One cameras that we all seek.

LART is a team that goes way beyond just the limited number of guys who will attend - all the way to a much larger team - RED User members.

Thanks everyone...

LART is a team that goes way beyond just the limited number of guys who will attend - all the way to a much larger team - RED User members.

Thanks everyone...

Well, Gibby.... You and Sharky are the heart and soul of the LART. And that is reflected in the excellent team you've assembled, which is surrounded in and by all the "Good Will" you have created, planted like a seed... it grows daily.

One big reason there is such a strong sense of community here at Reduser, is the inclusionary attitude you have perpetuated since day one...

Not just in sharing the benefits of all your experience with us, post after post..... But also by reaching out to all the redusers to make suggestions and request's of the LART.

It's awesome.

Way To Go Redusers,

I am closing the contributions as of today until I have received and tallied the "checks in the mail." Paypal Total is now $1,965. Add to this the $250+ of "checks in the mail" puts us at current total of $2,215 or $80 short of the goal. I will post a final update when the checks are all in this week?

Also, with everyone's blessing, if the checks exceed the $2,295 bid cost I will refund one LART volunteer team member's generous $100 donation.

This is the Aug 4-6 Paypal summary:

$20.00 USD -$1.08 USD
$100.00 USD -$3.20 USD
$20.00 USD -$0.88 USD
$40.00 USD -$1.46 USD

Thanks big time to the reduser global community that pitched in from the LART producers, volunteers and crew,

Sharky

BTW - here's the menu link from the selected caterer if you're curious. Their official bid pdf was posted on page one of this thread?

BTW - very cool LART development today thanks to Gibby. Can't wait until he posts the specs closer to official confirmed Red camera shipping later this month.

Your humble LART servant,

MMMmmm... Looks good to me.

Anyway, I just want to give a big thanks to all the contributors. I'm absolutely amazed at how fast this community pulled together and donated to feed everyone at LART. And just for the record, my contribution was not the $100 one Sharky mentioned. Awful generous of a fellow team member.

A thousand apologies Kilgroesan. I did not intend to omit or overlook your personal contribution to the LART food drive as a LART volunteer member. I simply saw the same paypal name and reduser name for the $100 contribution today and made the statement about a possible refund.

Humbly yours,

Sharky

A thousand apologies Kilgroesan.

Hehe... No need for apologies!!! I mentioned somewhere else that I contributed and I just wanted to make sure that if anyone was reading through, they wouldn't credit me for the generous donation -- credit needs to go where it's due, assuming that person wants it. Anyway, maybe I shouldn't have brought it up at all.

...The $100 donation probably came from Chuck anyway. I bet he's trying to butter you up for when he lets Jake clean all the remaining food from the buffet.

I am very thankful to everyone here from the suggestion (Donetello and Sam), contributions ( all of you!!!) and execution (Ken for spearheading and Sam for keeping all of us on point).

Also, with the blessing of Gibby and Ken, I hope to include a montage honoring this grand gesture (in the LART bts doco for those that did not know that one will be made for your consumption), it's contributers and it's importance in expressing the kind of special community that REDUSER is to all of us. There is something that is very special to me about not only being able to break bread with the members of LART but that the source of this is born from the kindness of my fellow REDUSER! I think all of you will find it to be quite entertaining and it will serve as a nice bridge between segments of important information that we all desire so very much. I have some great music picked out and I am currently getting the avenue cleared for the rights and clearances...

Ken--- that menu is unreal. Thank you sir!

Cheers-- Andrew Benz

Ya, other than the Vegitarians on the LART team I'd have to agree with you.

Paypal $1,965
Checks 380

Grand Total $2,345

That puts us about $50 over the catering cost. I will apply this overage to an abundant supply of bottled water and soft drinks in the coolers with everyone's blessing. It can get a bit hot during the Autumn/Fall days in LA.

Thanks big time,

Sharky

Big thank you to everyone! It is very much appreciated. I was planning on a 2 day caffeinated LART binge, like usual when a project is pressing, now with all those calories to burn I have no excuse but to work my a$$ off. :)

It's hitting a 105° F here today and it should cool down to 100° F when we start playing soccer this afternoon. Is that enough prep for the LA heat? ;)

Big thanks to our red brothers across the pond - received another $50 check for LART today - should clear by LART:biggrin:

That puts us $100 over the target, HOWEVER, I forgot to include the 16 professional models that have volunteered to work one day each on LART (2models/team, 4 teams over 2 days) in the 25 person crew list. Oh well, I'm sure they'll only eat salad anyway?

I am not going to post the talent roster until after LART per Gibby's editing and approval. I gotta' say though in all my years of shooting fiction work from MOW's to episodics like Silk Stalkings and features plus being raised in Hollywood I'm rather jaded when it comes to "standard" beauties.

This professional model that volunteered to work LART is worth noting, from a DP's perspective of course.

Shame on you for forgetting the models in the food tally....

As for the red head, she's pretty -- hair is the perfect color for the event. I bet she eats 1/2 lb. double bacon cheeseburgers with a chocolate shake at least 4 days a week.

Andrew Benz

That's not a model, that's the most beautiful android ever! ...and if she does eat 1/2 lb. bacon cheeseburgers I bet she washes them down with synthetic 30 weight...:-)

haha, should'a guessed you might need actual people to shoot at.
I used to be a model up till 2 years ago.
if you need any extras let me know.
I still look ok, just don't have the time any more. But anything for LART :)
and since I eat 5 large meals a day I'll take care of that too.
I am in LA right now but I will probably be in dickson TN at the time. But to be honest I want to come back to LA soon, i just need a reason!
