I did it. I put down an order and made the downpayment for a Red One and all the accessories and lenses available from Red. And now I even have an idea for the story for my first film. It's going to be about how I nearly died from the beating my wife gave me when she found out that I spent $70K one my first camera as a complete film noob!

I need a whiskey...

I have my wife to thank for pushing me to make the reservation when I did. I was sitting there, hours before the reservations closed, thinking, "It's not the $1000 now, it's the $XXXXXX down the line that worries me." But she made me do it, and I'm so glad she did.

I hope you didn't blindly reserve everything! Why would you need the raw port? That's like $5k and hardly anyone could make use of that. Then if you got the premium production pack you wouldn't need the basic. Then if you were getting the Red Zoom then you wouldn't want the Canon FD or Nikon or B4 mounts (there's another $5k)....

True. True. They have their shoes and clothes and jewelry. Can't we have atleast RED?

I mean it's not that we crave for the latest camera that we see in magazines the way they crave for the latest Victoria's Secret lingerie..what?..we do...? Whatever..I want my RED and I want one now!!

don´t forget, the story makes the movie.
I saw lot´s of "small" indie features the last time - done in berlin, barcelona .. - a cool young story, a good and sexy actress, a small DV / HDV set and you are done :)
Once you get this new, fresh and crisp look the h´wood standard suddenly looks a bit oldfashioned.

It may much better to rent the things you really need for your project and save lots of money for the really important things - TIME, light, mask, good actors, and don´t forget - good catering for good vibes .. ;)

@kalone - any Idea what they charge in berlin for a red setup ? Is something available there ? Ludwig munich announces here November 2007.

I remember at the beginning of my music career there came a point where I had to choose between my then fiancée and going on the road with my band for the entire summer. Guess who I chose. Let me just say that many so called "fiancées" have come and gone and my music career is still rocking. Today, if I had to choose between the RED One and my girlfriend , I'd be like "Peace, baby, and don't let the door hit cha where the lord sho' nuff split cha!!!

Jack, like I said in your other thread, toys and boys go hand in hand. Now that you've taken that huge leap of faith, spend the time between now and the "landing" (hoping you do land on the ever elusive island of marital reciprocity and bliss as against the rocky, torny islet of divorce lawyers, divorce courts and one-suitcase-only on your way out.) developing a good alibi... you might just need it, or maybe not. Good luck with it, and I really mean that.

Hi Deepcode,
Laguun here in Berlin ordered two Reds. But they want to test their cams for a longer period, so, no, they didn't tell about rates now.

I'm also getting one, somewhere 2008, but I don't have a rental company like Ludwig Kamera or Laguun.

Do you also do film projects, Deepcode?

Hi Deepcode,

Do you also do film projects, Deepcode?

just some small things, the last time I did a DVD "making of" and shots for the munich trade fair "automatica" - if you want to take a look:
www.deepcode1.com/index.php?l=en&pid=0133
nothing exciting, it´s industry standard business.

My key business is flash developing and sound design, additional 3D and compositing.
Film and photo is really fun for me, so I hope the RED PPC will be cool to take it always with me. the R1 is a dream, but much too expensive and to big for my purposes. To get such a investment back I would need to rent it and doing DOP jobs 100% of my time.

Hey Jack, I found first quotes here in Europe for rental in swizerland.
They talk about approx. 1200 EUR / day, this is ~1650 USD, but they didn´t tell whats included.
But maybe you can get your investment back when you able to rent the set for ~ 2 Months .. not that bad idea ?

Tell this your wife. Its better then burning money in your DOW or Nasdaq .. ;)

Nice graphics and camera work.
I've seen that you work with Cinema4D, is it easy to learn and use? Because I tested a range of packages and finally went with XSI, much cleaner and easier than everything else, in my opinion, but I didn't check C4D.

BTW. I'm a music video director (Sido, Fler, Bushido stuff, maybe you've heard of them).

Respect the cock! And tame the cunt! Tame it!
You will not control me! No! You will not take my soul! No! You will not win this game! Because it's a game, guys. You want to think it's not, huh? You want to think it's not? Go back to the schoolyard and you have that crush on big-titted Mary Jane. Respect the cock. You are embedding this thought. I am the one who's in charge. I am the one who says yes! No! Now! Here! Because it's universal, man. It is evolutional. It is anthropological. It is biological. It is animal. We... are... men!
And we buy Reds... gotta go now, gotta clean the kitchen... bye guys

Sido, Bushido yes .. but never heard about "Fler"

C4D for me is good for people like me who do 3D beside other things - flat learning curve, you get very good and fast results, very fast and good looking renderer.
Systems like 3D Max or Maya are much more complex to learn, but have also more special features and Plugins. But it´s more for specialists doing this 24/7.
You can easily try C4D, they have a full working demo (expect saving).
With "mocca 3" (they have such funny names for their plugins) C4D it now adds very good character animation tools, too. This was missing in further versions - they had "mocca 2", but was often awful to work with.
And it´s a way cheaper licensing, e.g. for multiple renderers then Maya. The studio version has unlimited CPU & network rendering! Very fair pricing. very good comunities and support. Multi - Monitor support. And localized also in german, it often makes the things easier in your native language, even when you speak english well. And you can sell your license to another person, in opposite to Maya or 3D Max.

I like it. :-)

I have a serious question...
If I order RED, will I pay first and wait for the camera to arrive, or do I order, wait and pay as soon as it's about to ship?

Chris Forbes
07-27-2007, 09:25 PM
It is a 10% deposit to place an order. The remainder is due just before the camera ships.

I guess I'm a lucky one. My wife looked at a picture of the fully rigged R1 and said, "Wow, that's sexy. We should get one for the bedroom."

It's a tool of my trade, a smart investment and an amortized deduction.

That licensing sceme of Alias/Autodesk is obscene, and when I heard of it, it was clear to me that I'd never buy their packages. But the usability sucked anyway, especially Maya's.

But the language thing can be a burden sometimes. An example: right now I'm working with a Berlin based company that mainly produces commercials and other things for foreign countries, the team is mixed and common language is english, so I'd run into a bit of trouble when I had trained on "germanized" :-) software. That's why I generally choose english, if possible.

Another positive thing about Cinema was it's legendary speed. Can you compare on that?

Same thing here Chris...I resisted at first because I'm a film snob but then realized the potential using it as a rental.

Hats off to the wives with insite!!!!
