View Full Version : announcing EAST COAST REDUSER EVENTS!

Okay ... with Jarred's blessing it's time to spill some beans.
Steve Sherrick, who produced the NAB 2009 REDUSER EVENT & I have partnered to produce a series of very, very special EAST COAST REDUSER EVENTS.
Here's the plan as it stands -
October 2009 - NYC (target date October 24th)
December 2009 - Boston
February 2010 - NYC
APRIL 2010 - NAB REDUSER EVENT
June 2010 - NYC
August 2010 - Boston
October 2010 - NYC
December 2010 - Boston
These will be ALL DAY events on SATURDAYS ending with a screening of a (at least one) feature film shot on RED and .... a party.
Because life is short.
We are currently focused on securing the venues in NYC and Boston. This will dictate some logistics of what we can or cannot do - as well as our budgetary constraints - once we have secured we can meet with potential sponsors, which we expect to do during IBC. Several companies have expressed interest privately, so I am confident enough to post.
I was totally impressed with what Steve did at NAB and totally excited to collaborate with him on producing some kick ass events.
We would love all your ideas and feedback as we shape the events - but the general concept is to combine a social, networking atmosphere with presentations, panels, demos and guest speakers. We are going to push hard to create exciting, educational panels and get the right guest speakers and presenters so this is not just "watch the vendors do the dog and pony show".
Stay tuned ....

Very cool. I would love to see some in depth discussions and demonstrations of real world work flow scenarios. Love when all the manufacturers get together but its very hard to get more than product demos at most of these.
Thanks for your work guys. NAB was great. I know this will be something to see.

These sound like solid ideas Mark.
Perhaps another would be shooting with the new RPP's. Many of us are expecting a set in the near future and some instruction on the finer points of lighting from a quality DP would be interesting.
I'm sure you and Steve will come up with some compelling reasons to attend. Thanks for your effort.

Awesome!
NYC and Boston are only a couple hours from me. Much easier than flying to Vegas or Cali to attend an event.

It would be great if you could one of the events more down south. Not everyone lives near Boston/NYC. Atlanta/Nashville/Charlotte would be great locations since they are all easily reachable in the south.

You never know, but as of right now it's easiest for Mark and I to organize these in our own backyards and we figure people won't mind traveling a little bit to spend a day or two in New York or Boston. We're hoping to really make these worth people's time. Nuts and bolts stuff stuff during the day that newbies and working professionals will benefit from. And we'll have some fun too, no doubt about that. Great chance for networking too. And we all know that sometime in the future there will be new cameras hitting the market, with potentially new topics to discuss.
Not that it's impossible to organize an event in distant places, as I did for the Vegas events, but those probably took a few years off my life. :-)

Your artwork was a big hit at NAB, and we'd be honored to have more contributions from you for these events as well. But we've got to get some money to pay you this time. :-)

Yeah, definitely excited to take part in one of these events, and glad it'll be a subway destination, not a flight. P.S. Lots of spaces in Brooklyn, guys...
Eager to see how things develop. Thanks again, Mark and Steve, for all you've done (and are doing) to give back to this community.
See you in October?
Cheers,
Clint

You don't owe me anything, Steve. It's an honour.
We can start chat about the whole thing when you want, I'm ready.

You guys should make one down here in Florida. There are a lot of good areas to have an event at. There's the Orlando Convention Center, Tampa Convention Center, I'm sure FSU or UCF wouldn't mind holding an event at either of their schools. I'd say it'd be cool to do it at Valencia Community College but I don't know how many people that would bring. lol.

Just a suggestion.

On second thought, November, December, January...those are pretty cold months. Florida has beaches, sunny weather, beaches...Hmm... Mark just smacked me in the head and said stop daydreaming. The events will be in NY and Boston. It was an interesting thought for a moment.

Haha, that's fine. Maybe I'll try to host something down here this time next year if you guys wouldn't mind helping out.
And yes, the beaches are very nice this time of year.

Nope. We need a big venue for a REDUSER event. But there will be some smaller events at Offhollywood soon enough.

Looks like Vegas event will happen first. But there will be events on the East Coast for sure. It's just a matter of logistics, sponsorship, etc. Not to mention that we don't like to do anything half hearted, so if we do it we want to do it right. Stay tuned, we will announce here when this event is greenlighted and ready to go.
In the meantime, hopefully you guys have made plans for Vegas or will at some point. Not going to want to miss it this year. :-)

Hi Steve (and Mark), my schedule doesn't allow for vegas or red day in la for that matter. Any future events planned for nyc tho, I will be happy to help if needed.

Both Steve & I will be supporting the instructors during REDUCATION in Vegas - we'll be there from the 7th on - so we will finally have some quality time together to discuss and strategize NYC event(s).

I'm going to put in a request for a Washington DC event. Its in the middle of the East Coast and is the nations 9th largest metropolitan area (ahead of Miami and about the same as Philly). Its also the 3rd largest filmmaking market in the country (counting industrial and documentary categories) after LA and NY.

Just throwing this out there, the weekend of June 19th would be a very bad weekend to have it in NYC

Adding my request for Washington DC metro area. Doesn't have to be "in" DC. Can be in Maryland or Northern VA within easy driving from Dulles or Reagan Airports.
If you're driving, somewhere between Baltimore and DC would work for most.
Stuart Smith
04-08-2010, 07:46 PM
yes on DC area event. NY isn't that bad a trip for me, but DC would be great. We had a Red event at a classic old theatre in Silver Spring MD (inside the beltway) just over a year ago. Local director/DP sponsored it. Our company was involved in the post workflow side of it, and there was a great turnout.
Mark & Steve, if you would be interested in doing something in the DC area let me know, I'm fairly sure I could get the same theatre involved again, and there is a very large support base to pull from around here for getting gear in to help in any way.
But, not on June 19th
Sorry, should also have mentioned Chesapeake systems in Baltimore for really pushing it

I was just about to ask for an east coast event as well and then found this thread, as I too couldn't make it to Las Vegas or LA.
I also would like to put a vote out there for DC as well; although I will attend in NYC, Charlotte or Atlanta if my schedule permitted. If it's in DC I can probably get a few more people from around here as well to come up that I've been convincing they need to go Red.
I too am a 7D shooter right now, and am not going to get my first hands on a Red One till August time frame (helping someone borrowing one), but I'd love to come learn more and meet a lot of the people using this technology.
In any case, thanks for doing this. I will definitely spread the work in NC when dates and such are announced.

I just moved to New York and have worked with the RED twice before but I had so much fun working with the camera I want to turn that into a full time profession.

I'm in Boston and new to RED. Are there any meetups or any events for Redusers in Boston, NY? I don't see a lot of activity in this thread, but maybe I'm missing more info.
