All of this talk about heat got me thinking about dust. In certain countries dust can be as big or an even bigger problem than heat. I know the RED has venting on the bottom, and the fans are going to have to let air circulate, so:

Is this going to allow dust into the camera? (it might be filtered airflow?)

or

Is the bottom venting acting more as heat sinks for the sensor?

Thanks,

david

AFAIK all the internal components are sealed separate from the ventilated area. I think heat sinks reach down into the ventilated area, allowing the sealed area to cool.

Of course!

This makes perfect sense. I am sure heat was a major consideration at conception so that type of cooling makes sense.

I can't imagine they're going to allow dust anywhere near the internals of the Red. The body is aluminum. Makes a great heat sink.

I was thinking that the mysterium runs so hot (like every sensor that needs to capture images this large at this rate) that they may have some kind of venting system, but I was just checking that it's all heat sink.

Thanks Brook. If the dust is kept out, the humidity will be kept out too. I can rest easy now.

The vents at the bottom make lots of sense, the way you explain it.
Thank goodness that the Red has a well designed body and isn't some cheap black box with vents on the side exposing the internals to dust.

It does bring up a point about sensor dust though. I know on some of the DSLRs dust becomes an issue in the field when changing lenses because of the charge on the sensor. Some of the new cameras have a mode that allows you to access the sensor for cleaning. I believe some even shake to allow dust to fall. Are there any sensor cleaning considerations? I'm sure there are.

Do a quick search on sensor cleaning or sensor dust... there's been plenty of discussion. :)
