I just watched this vid about the plugin from The Foundry that eliminates skewing from fast moving with digital cameras. Does RED suffer this effect too? And how can u get rid of it without the above mentioned plugin??

any camera that uses a rolling shutter will produce some skew (that includes film cameras). The RED ONE suffers from a little bit of skew, but it's very minor and not noticeable unless steps are taken to exaggerate it. a long lens, handheld, fast shutter shot for example will be the most noticeable, although even then I'd still use the shot.

Thanks, but I don't get it. RED doesn't have a mechanical shutter, so how can it produce this skew effect?? :confused1:

The skew used to be something to really watch for, I have seen vast improvements in the footage from build 17 onwards. You can usually spot build 15 or earlier footage when they whip pan. Like anything else, if you have a particular shot you want to try that might be more problematic, just do some testing and I'm sure you'll get great results, I've been shocked by some of the recent footage I've seen our camera shoot with virtually no skew at all even with vertical poles in the shot and tracking at high rates of speed (heli).

because the CMOS technology the camera uses exposes one line of pixels at a time, from top to bottom, not the whole sensor at once. This is one of the main arguments people have when discussing CMOS versus CCD sensors, which use a a global shutter that exposes the entire sensor at the same moment.

The 5D also uses a CMOS sensor which uses a rolling shutter technique, although the skew is much more pronounced than that of the RED ONE.
