View Full Version : LART Torrents

Just wondering whether we'll be setting up torrents for distribution of files. Always good to have these things prepared in advance. Especially if a few of the members are able to take the files with them when they leave so that a reasonably sized distribution is setup from the getgo. Perhaps even divide the files between the various members to ease on space.

If you require a webpage putting together for linking the files and adding descriptive text on the fly I'm more than happy to helpout, just let me know what you need. Otherwise simply posting the torrent links up on the forums should suffice.

Fantastic idea. Let's hope the LART decides to release some of the footage. I guess they feel they can't promise anything now - eg on the 0.0001% chance the footage looks strange, they have said they'd talk to Red and try to get the problem fixed before releasing messed-up footage that folks will spread over the internets ;)

But we're all pretty much totally confident the footage will look great, we might as well discuss torrents now, right?

Hi Bruce,

Interestingly it was not until Geoff Boyle's plotted a graph of David Stump's footage relative to other cameras, that people started to realize there was an issue with dynamic range, that was after many thousands of downloads.

Paul, excellent idea.... generous offer.

Right on.

Or just a direct link hosted by someone on a server?

PaulClements

My initial thoughts were that you'd really need a dedicated server which would be an added expense that's why I suggested the torrent route.

That said we could always setup a dedicated server account for a month, anyone that has made a donation to the LART team or makes a donation for the server hosting could be given first dibs to download the footage before opening it up to all.

Get a hosting company in CA to setup a dedicated server. That way someone from LART could just walk in with a portable harddrive and copy the files across, can you imagine trying to upload them over broadband!

Thanks for that suggestion Paul...it's an excellent one. We're analyzing our options on that. I'm sure we'll find a good solution on that, whether it be a torrent or direct link. Everyone on RED User will be anxious to get a peek at some of the footage, so we'll do our best we to post it up. The testing days will be long days - but fun days! That said, our first mission is to pack as much meaningful work into the two days we have...and then to get some impressions and footage posted for everyone to check out.

I'll be bringing external storage and will bring back anything I'm allowed to take with me. I'll also be happy to host too. With my current capacity, I can probably donate about 750GB of hosting space and 7 or 8 TB/month bandwidth. I'll look into it some more this week.

That sounds great Jeff. Nice one.

Great offer!

Just curious though, isn't LART more about the hands on RED know how as shared and written by Gibby on reduser post LART than the online 4K deliverables given current technological constraints?

I'll check and see if straightface can't take some of the bandwidth brunt as well.

Hi Gibby and LART crew. I'm really looking forward to seeing your footage, as I'm sure everyone else is too. A few questions that I couldn't find answers to online (too many posts to go thru).

What type of footage can we expect to see?
Is there a list of what is to be shot beyond colored boards?
Can we get a hard date when footage will be posted? :whistling:

I can try to get my partner to donate server space if need be.

Probably with a combination of Jeff's hosting and putting it up on Vuze/Torrents, all bases would be covered. Lots of us can throw up mirrors, too.

I've got the dirty details on what I can do with my current hosting abilities. Basically, we're looking at about 8TB per month that I can dish out without investing in additional bandwidth. So I've got some good overhead here.

Sounds like a lot, but it may not be that much when all is considered. I suppose it depends on what actually gets made available to the viewing public and all that... That's Gibby's department. I guess we'll know more over the next couple weeks as LART approaches.

uh oh, no one from LART has posted yet...

cmon, Gibby! wheres your 20 page reply? :)

what will the image dimensions anyway? i hope that we won't get another 4K file like in the past. the max I'd like to have will be 1080 HD, scaled and cropped ( scaled for judgement of overall "feel and look" and cropped for sharpness, texture etc. ). I may be able to provide some bandwith, too, but not for 4K...

Count me in on donating bandwidth... 10Mbit unlimited Europe. PM me.

None of us really have 4K displays on our computers, so I suppose it would be 1080p? And maybe 4K stills/grabs?

Gavin Greenwalt
08-10-2007, 02:03 PM
If we're shooting 4k greenscreen material people are going to need at least a second of footage to really look at it themselves. Stills don't tell you a whole lot.

Jeff Kilgroe
08-10-2007, 02:40 PM
Exactly. And if you want to get the whole picture (hehe) of what's going on, you'll need the full 4K clip. Sure, we'll probably have some 1080p stuff done as either down-rez or cropped sections. Anyway, lots of details to be worked out still and it's too early to say what will be available for everyone to see.

It'd be good if someone from Red could make a downloadable version of RedCine, that way we could download the footage in 4K and experience handling the conversion to whatever format we wanted. It'd also make it easier to manage all the footage for the LART team since they wouldn't have to do any processing and could just post the RAW footage.

i fully agree.

it would be quite helpful, if redcine is available to reservation holders before the hardware ships.

I'm happy to host footage or stills and we've got tons of bandwidth not being used right now. I also started a thread awhile ago about hosting and mirroring and a lot of people said they would host/mirror too.

I figure Red could support this bandwidth wise on a few good servers and a good pipe (why make member eat the bandwidth)

Hey Guys,
I could set up a LART "Channel" on our bittorent client www.vuze.com. That way you could make whatever footage you want for sale, and any other footage you would like free.
I can create the Channel in just about 2 days and the footage can be directly uploaded whenever you like. You can direct people their through our magnet links. This way, everyone can enjoy the Footage and have and we can introduce LART to our Millions of viewers or "Vuzers" worldwide as a way to advertise them through the Channel button. Its completely free, i do this for many other small organizations and companies as well to help them get their products out there and videos to our user community. It's win, win for everyone. This way no one has to spend any money or waist valuable bandwidth etc.
Also, as a reservation holder myself, and fan of LART, i can't wait to see more of this footage! (also can't wait until March/April for mine).
What do you all think?

Sorry to ask of this is easy to find but:

Are there set dates and locations for LART yet? Is this an open invitation for all res holders/camera owners... are all welcome - maybe a sticky could be posted with the details of the where and when????

Thanks

Steve Gibby and I are producing LART in October. The location/studio is locked but the exact dates are not yet set as we are waiting on full RED ONE camera features enabled and, as posted previously, absolutely swamped with our first RED ONE projects.

LART is invitation only and the location is not public knowledge. The reason is simple. We have assembled an impressive team and an ambitious agenda for the 2 day event. So, we have to be focused and disciplined to pull it off, i.e, only the volunteers, crew and talent because we will be very busy in getting it all done.

That said, when we post the dates and agenda ANYONE that feels they can contribute to what we don't already have committed can PM me or Gibby with their ideas/offers.

More details coming soon...

VUZE is excited to work with LART on creating a high quality venue for 4k/2K HD+ footage. With our San Francisco and French Data Center's we have the bandwidth to support through a bit-torrent engine a means to scale sizes assuming the viewer has the ability to watch it. Our optimum size is 1920x1080P for most viewers to be able to play back the RED footage. Were developing a workflow starting with REDCINE and ending with a community LART Channel on Vuze in HD+. Have a great thanksgiving all!
