View Full Version : Ten months on a CF card?

I'd like to do a four seasons shoot on a single CF card, shooting several minutes each time, over about a ten month period. I would leave the footage on the card (of course downloading between shoots for safety) then do playback before the next shoot to use the previous footage as framing and exposure guide.

Anyone know if this would work over the likely new builds that RED will introduce this year? Would I have to stick to the same build over the ten month period to get all the footage to play back?

Thanks in advance.

Great Idea.
As i remember you always can playback old Build footage on new camera .
For example If your camera is on 20 Build you can playback 16 Build footage from CF on it .

Douglas, you just gave me an interesting idea for a camera feature, the ability to load in a single frame from a CF or usb stick and overlay with transparency on the current feed! You could then use this for frame matching, fx work, etc. Sorry, this doesnt help your question, just had to put that out there

as i recall - the camera asks the operator to format the media after updating the camera to the newer build.
not 100% sure though.

Media shot with old builds typically cannot be played back with new builds in camera. You need to reformat the media to use the new build.

Yeah, reformat with a new build. Thanks Steve, I thought that was the case . . .

Shawn - that's the idea, frame matching of an object over several shoots separated by months. I've done this before with a single digital tape. You can also tape a clear overlay onto the monitor and do a tracing, but playing the actual clip that you shot months ago on the same CF card would be better.

They are already loading graphics and overlaying them on the EVF/LCD and they already have file upload mechanisms, while not to say this would be an overnight fix, it seems all the capacity would be there to get my idea into an upcoming build

I remember hearing about a gadget to do this on video taps, can't remember what it was, though.

Hey Doug,

Can't you just load the old build that you shot on when you are doing your masterpiece. Then reload the newer builds for your everyday use.

Hey, I asked RED for that feature back when it was still in development. Really would rock if you could do that.

Right Steve, go back to the original build. That could work.

The panasonic 26" has a built in freeze frame/split screen function that would be perfect for your needs.

If you had been doing this shoot over the past year, you couldnt go back to the original build. A year ago build 15 was the stable release, and upgrading to build 16 is not reverseable.

So you'll need to be sure that when you upgrade you can go back to previous versions to complete your shoot.

From my understanding from the first post, Doug wants to do this over the next year so he should be OK. that is correct though that you cannot go backwards once you upgrade to build 16.

My point was not that he shouldnt upgrade his cameras - but that in the future he has to make sure that each build he installs will be backward compatible. IIRC theres been a couple of builds where you could not go back, the latest being 16, but I believe 12 was another. So if Red does that again, he will be stuck on an old build until the shoot is competed, or find a different way of confirming his alignment.
