I am looking into a buyng the cooke zoom 20-100 T3.1.
It's from a rental place.
I don't know much about it.
Is it worth $3500?

Any advise?

If it's in nice shape, comes with a case and maybe some support stuff, zoom motor bracket, yes.

What Rental house? Contact me off list if you like.

Hi Albert,

got one and love it. Very versatile and has a close focus, almost macro.
Bought it from a rental house as well.

If it holds focus (close and far) through out the entire range (collimator, eye) it's definately 3.5k worth. All barrels must turn smoothly. It won't get cheaper, at least when the first bunch of 1.000 Reds will hit the market.

Feel free to contact me off list.

Thank you all.
I know it's heavy...can it be used hand-held?
I am thinking to use it mostly for a documentary work.
Is it good in a low light situations ?

Hi,

Not really except for a few minutes, it's quite heavy, its been done but not recommended..

T3.1 is not very fast for low light, thats where T1.3 primes come in.

for hand held = NO
look for a cooke 20-60 for hand held ...

T3.1 in low light ?
that is going to depend on what level of noise you can accept ..
if RED at ISO 1000-2000 is acceptable - then if you normally shoot ISO 500vfilm with T2 lens it (T3) should do it ... then there is ISO 4000 ?

First of all, let me chime in with the others: the deal sounds good, if the lens is in an ok state.

however for typical documentary work it might not be the ideal lens (heavy and slow), and for low-light / natural light and handheld it would be not ideally suited, especially if you intend to work w/o ac.

It depends on what kind of documentary, but I would not plan on doing any hand held with this lens. Also the focus scale is very expanded ( lots of rotation from minimum to infinity ) which is a very good thing in the studio with an AC, but not so good for a one person operator, trying to shoot unrepeatable real life.

There is a 25-80 lens from Russia, OPF-29-1 that is small, it's a t3.4. I own one and will probably try it at the LART.

I'm actually still hoping that Red makes that 18-85...

It's a documentary for Cirque du Soleil and it's about a creation of the new show (making-off).
I can't use the lights and must to be very versatile.
The crew is basic:cameraman, sound-man and me.

More and more I am drifting away from the purchase of the 20-100 cooke.
The red 18-50 looks good, but it's too short.

Sounds like a cool project,

Maybe a bunch of Nikons, a 17-35 and an 80-200 and some fast primes. If I had to be a one man band and carry all my stuff that would not be a bad way to go. Since your DP is going to be doing eye focus...

have you considered shooting it in 2k with super16 lens ?
and pehaps the wide shoots in 4k ?

35mm dof, wide open lens, heavy lens, documentary, given light only, no ac on focus and 4k resolution....and finally fast moving artists... now thats pretty challenging!

It's a nice piece of glass and optical techs. like to work on it.

I am thinking about nikons. I got 17-35 and 80-200.
I also got some time ago zeiss ZF (nikon mount) primes (50 and 85).
My DOP doesn't really like the idea...and I understand;
For my own stuff it's perfect, but on the location like this you really need one lens that can do it all.
The glass is often wide open and dealing with the ring adapters for the FF can be a nightmare.

We don't need more then HD so I guess the super 16 is fine.
Any recommendations for the zoom?

Much appreciate everybody's input.
Cheers

In 35mm there is no such thing, even by the most generous definitions of doing it all.

Super 16mm ? The newer canons are nice. I just shot a music video for Sum 41 with a canon 6.6-66 and 11-165. You could Doco quite well with those, they are sharp and fairly well behaved. I've heard the Angenieux 7-81 is nice but have never used it. Always pretty happy with the Canons, Especially the wide ones.

I still would go the 4k route myself Nikons or whatever... I find it not so hard to keep things in focus on a 35mm sized sensor and like the look better.

When you down res it to HD it's any focus nasties are going to smooth out a bit anyway. I love saying down res to HD.
