View Full Version : Performance the same on macbook and 8 core Mac Pro???

So in another thread I've been discussing my issue about not getting proxy playback of 4kHD material on my laptop. M proxies for some reason don't work in FCP and H proxies play back at about 4fps, which is also weird because regular 4k H proxies play back at about 20 fps on my laptop.

Anyway, I brought over my r3d's to a 8 core Mac Pro, and I'm getting the exact same performance as I did on my 2.33core duo laptop!

4k M proxies= 24fps
4k H proxies= 20fps
4kHD M proxies = NA/red bar
4kHD H proxies = 4 fps

Can any one explain to me 1: Why the 4kHD proxies are trouble in FCP, and 2: why on earth I'm not getting a huge performance boost using the 8 core tower instead of my 3 year old laptop?!?!?

THANKS! :)

What if you try rendering more than one clip at a time on the Mac Pro?

What is your disk throughput like? Could slow disks be the bottleneck?

Just to be clear, i'm trying to edit the proxies. I can try to render clips and tell you how it goes if that info will be helpful, but my goal is to edit the proxies in final cut WITHOUT rendering.

without rendering? if you storage is fast enough ,it is possible in another way.

FCP does not use threading very well when playing. The R3D decode and debayer is very hard to thread in the decode and debayer of a single frame, which is what FCP needs to play RT.

that would make sense except that other people say they get excellent playback from H proxies. I have no idea way this 8 core Mac pro can't play them. And more curiously why I'm getting the EXACT performance as I do on my laptop, not any better, and no worse.

What do I need to do to get 24fps playback with H proxies?

I guess I'll contact RED support later today.
