Since the camera has an HDMI preview output and most HD LCDīs come with HDMI, it would be fantastic if we can get some sort of HDMI "VHS" but solid state for video assist purposes. Also it would need to be separate from the camera so the director can review the footage while the crew moves the camera to another place or while the Red Ram magazines are being backed up...What do the rest think about this and what are the rest of you thinking about videoassist solutions ?

IMO video assit - all 3rd party hardware -
you either connect from RED HDMI or HDSDI and then to 3rd party converter box ( or distribution ) for SD monitors ...

There are some really good threads about Video Assist on the board here.
I suggest using the search option to find some very good discussions. :)

HD-SDI too expensive for videoassist, SD on the other hand is very low quality and today itīs impossible to buy a new VHS...at least in here. So thatīs why I suggested HDMI but I donīt know of a cheap and reliable HDMI recorder out there...

Yes, Iīve seen some of them but they focus on other aspects than a "standard videoassist" solution. As I said weīve got the HDMI output (possibly with frame guides), weīve got cheap consumer 720p HD LCDīs of all sizes but I donīt know of a HDMI small reliable recorder out there...
Sony announced a small HDMI videowalkman but with no HDMI input and based on miniDV. Iīm thinking (wishing) about a small rugged, AC/DC, hopefully Compact Flash based, HDMI in/out with rec, play/pause, stop, ff/next clip, rew/prev clip buttons and remote control. I think this would be a terrific tool/addition to Red One.

I think the HDMI is 720p @ max 60fps it Shows record area + look around, with embedded audio plus time code.
however it has to be confirmed, as it is quite old info that i am taking out my mind here.

yep, HDMI is 720 only. I remember the same. Makes the monitoring from Bruce Allen so attractive ;-). 720 native display.
