View Full Version : No 25p in Blu-Ray?

It came as a big surprise to check the Blu-Ray spec today and see no 25p options for 1080, seeming to leave only options to hack a 25p stream to 24p or 50i.

Is it really like that? Or is 25p an option that is not in the "theoretical" spec, but ends up in the "practical" spec the players use?

If not.... any opinions on the best way to master a 1080 Blu-Ray disk from Pal 25p shot on a Sony 750?
Thanks.

Blu-ray does support 1080p25 encodes, you just have add field hints to the progressive file, as only 1080i50 is supported as a stream format.

Or you could gear the movie down to 24p, which also broadens your potential audionce.

But 1080p25, with 50i hints is the best way.

OK.... so for a guy with none of the software here at the moment.... I encode to 50i with a "progressive" tag and then it'll trick the mastering software?

24p does have some attractions, but this is for marketing material for a European company, so the benefits for NTSC-land viewing are not a big deal.....but how would a PAL player/TV show 24p mastered Blu-Ray material? Does it just add a reverse pull-down and show it as 60i like an NTSC setup would do?

All modern Televisions in PAL territories support 60i, and HD scereens also 1080i60.

If you encode in 24p (23.976) all Blu-ray players will add pulldown and output 60i or 60p.
Playstation 3 supports 24p over HDMI, IF your Flatpanel supports that.
No difference really if your television has a good reverse telecine chip.

I don't know which software you are using, so I can't help you there.

Cheers Anders.

Software is all Adobe, so options to encode in Premiere or After Effects, or transcode in Encore, if any route makes any difference. Could also transcode in Squeeze I think.... but not sure on the Blu-Ray options there.

do 1080/50i. Going to 24p has no sense for europe.
If you go 24p or 30p you will have many problems with audio and TC.
