Hi Guys, I was wondering, if everyone paid the import tax when they were getting their RED Ones or is there some sort of trick to side step it?

I've just got taxed 500 for the RED Rocket itself, so I'm kind of scared what the RED One will bring...

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

RED ONE is a "Digital still motion camera", note the "still". If your main purpose is shooting still images then there should not be any tax. Just inform you custom officer appropriate custom codes for a still camera.

Is this rule applied to anywhere in the world?

Here in France it's been a tough fight, basically they treat this on a case by case basis. It depends on who handles your package. And I've been fighting for almost two years with the French customs on that matter and this is just nightmare.

Where are you located? Australia is pretty breezy as there was next to no duty, and the tax is refundable if you are registered. I think my whole Red kit cost me about $300 in the end.

I'm in Singapore, I was hoping it'd be easier here,
Got an office in Dubai but they still haven't named the roads there yet etc. otherwise, being a tax free zone I'd have sent it there

Didn't want it sent to me in England cause I can imagine wth VAT would be like on a RED One...*shudder*

In the UK, there was 0% duty but, at the time, 17.5% VAT.

I've just been looking into this because I'm about to put in a few orders stateside. Honestly, the advice pages on the Government websites are an absolute joke and must have been penned by a psychotic!

Here's a few tit-bits from what I've learned so far, (and this goes for anyone importing from the US into the EU).

The amount of duty depends on the type of goods and country of origin.

Customs duty is payable on anything bought from outside the EU over £7 and VAT is payable (at full rate) if the goods cost over £18.

Duty rates vary on filmmaking kit; importing from the US the rate is 3.7% for a camera, zero for a lens, 2.7% for parts, zero on lights. You apply the percentage of duty to the cost of the goods plus the cost of transportation.

VAT absolutely is payable at full rate on the cost of everything above. Apparently, it's up to us to declare the goods (if your courier hasn't charged you for it) and then claim the VAT back - cheeky so and so's!

Here's a very useful site with a link to the imort tariffs for the EU:

Hi,

Stating where you lived might help with the answers. Are you talking about import duties or sales tax / VAT?

Stephen

Try looking at Singapores customs home page
http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page03a.aspx?id=5676

Customs & Excise Duties
Singapore is a free port and has relatively few excise and import duties. Excise duties are imposed principally on tobacco, petroleum products and liquors. Also, very few products are subject to import duties. The duties are mainly on motor vehicles, tobacco, liquor and petroleum products.

Goods & Services Tax
GST is a tax on consumption. The tax is paid when money is spent on goods or services, including imports.

EDIT

How much of the charges was your clearing agents fees? What was the currency of the 500?

i don't think there was anything on the agents fees...

I just got a letter today given to me for Singapore $500
That was for the RED Rocket,

Thats the GST...so it says...but $500?!
I've got the RED One on Monday coming in, Can't imagine what thats going to be like,

I'm only really very shocked because I was handed this today and received the Rocket on last Tuesday...Guess I'm use to it when I pay the GST with the goods...

Apologizes for my ignorance, I've bought stuff from overseas before when I was in the UK but those were DVDs, the only time I got hammered for this stuff was 20quid and that was for the Hollywood VFX box set, the stuff from video copilot never has been an issue with the VAT/GST...so the differences between the two I really dont see but oh well...

I'll see what happens next friday if another slip comes in...

You claim the VAT back. SO, it's no so bad.

That's assuming you're a business and not a hobbyist.
