Yes it can. It hasn't been formally announced, but has been hinted at the overcranking can be achieved to the red drive and cf module (2K). At 4k overcranking, I'm pretty sure you'd need the raw data port which in time will let you shoot 60 fps @ 4k. That is the limit. There is currently a debate on whether or not to keep the 720p function which would allow for 120 fps recording. Time will tell.

We can shoot in 4K up to 30p onto CF cards, so that gives you a little bit of overcranking in 4K redcode raw. That subtle slo-mo effect can be very useful.

We have not confirmed 4K at 30P to CF (yet). We are working on it, but it is not done.

Another silly question:

I am confident that over cranking (at a yet to be determined resolution/frame rate) will be a feature, but will the camera be able to change frame rates while filming (i.e. speed ramping like with the Arricam an others)?

Oh, ok. My mistake. I was just going by what's on the chart, but CF cards may be too slow, I guess. If it's not possible, then 24p is fine by me.

Thanx for the info on Red Slo-mo.
I am going to re-fight WWII..."Totaler Kreig".
Going to crash a P-51 and blow up a Sherman.
I'd rather do modeling than computer effects, 60fps should do it....FF

So what do we have now for higher frame rates, I'm totally confused as to what has been dropped and whats added or new and to what media?

If you're just shooting a one-off miniature shot. Film might be your most cost effective choice. There aren't many solutions right now which rent an uncompressed 60fps 4k capture method.

I second that. I really hope that the specification chart on red.com holds true in respect for the four most important features (for me)

1. 4K at 24 fps in Redcode
2. 2K at up to 60 fps in RedCode
3. 4K at 60 fps through raw data port (portable raid system?)
4. 2K at 120 fps through raw data port

Any clarifications on this?

Just a thought. If you're shooting a scene in 4k with 35mm depth of field and decide to shoot part of it at 2k/96fps you will open up two stops to compensate for the light loss. The equivalent depth of field now with your super 16mm FOV 2k resolution will effectively be the same as the 4k 35mm at 24fps.

4K will actually go up to 30p onboard (at least to the RED-DRIVE) as of now. The ability to record 30p to compact flash is in development. As far as we know, the rest of that information is accurate and stands. We do know that they are working to improve the framerates where they can, however (96fps at 2K onboard is one potential option), and that list may expand/change as the camera nears production.

So what am I worrying about  I'm going back to sleep now!
