if you understand german, read this:

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/Cinemaxx-Gruppe-ruestet-auf-Alle-Kinos-bald-mit-3D-und-4K--/meldung/144263

but if you're german's a bit on the rusty side:

in short it states that the cinemaxx group will upgrade at least one room in each of their 31 german theaters with 4k 3d projectors by december 17th. yes, that's the avatar release. (an investment of over 5 million €)

the gear will be sony's srxr and realD's 3D system (stated as the only 4K systems available as of today) edit: when watching 3D it's only 2K (title's misleading)

as far as of today, digital projection in germany is 2k except for one multiplex cinema.

The Sony system is 2K as well. The 4K chip is split so that two 2K images (left eye and right eye) can be presented simultaneously through two projection lenses. This eliminates the need for triple flashing each eye, as is customarily done with "conventional" RealD equipped DLP Cinema projectors. It is arguable whether this really improves the viewing experience. The primary advantage that Sony brings to the table is the ability to project 3D at higher frame rates, up to 60p. This makes it a potentially better platform for live events that would use those kind of frame rates.

which is true for 3D, but as you said yourself the system in itself is 4K. so when delivering 3D movies, you have 2x2K and when watching plain, old, flat movies they can deliver 4K resolution.

maybe the title of my first post is misleading...
