Well this is probably the last place I should ask, but could somebody suggest me a good place in LA to make tape (D5) to film (35mm) transfer? I know efilm should be very good, but what I hope is to find a place which is new and still has to develop a customer base, which could mean GOOD prices. I need to transfer a short (18min) for a festival screening.
And yes I do appologize to everybody who hates film for doing this question in this forum here:))
Thanks
Istvan

Level 3 Post/Fotokem in Burbank does very professional work, but I don't think they are on the cheap side of things.

I would hope that this is actually a great place to find people who love film!
Besides the more obvious labs, here are a few others to consider:
Four Media Company - Burbank
818-840-7166
Imagica USA - Los Angeles
310-305-8081
Ringer Video - Burbank
818-954-8621
I am sure someone else here knows of other labs to consider.

Thanks for the lists
Bradleyvance: indeed Fotokem is not on the cheaper side.
khmuse:
Imagica USA was bought by Fotokem and seems to deal mostley with 65--70mm films, at least this is what I got from the business informations I found;
Four Media Company I remeber I saw driving around in Burbank, but I cannot find any web-side of them
Ringer Video I don't know and will look for them
BTW, I know that most people here love film:), I just wanted to avoid the "...why do you want to go to film if only digital is the future discussions here..."
Somebody else have some experience with labs who do filmrecordings? Somebody told me that lately there have been sold many filmrecorders in Southern California. If this is true then they need customers, I would think....
Thanks

You might want to contact Arri and other recorder manufacturers to see who their 'newest' customers are. Might just get lucky and find someone with more capacity than business.
If you're willing to go beyond L.A., try dvfilm.com. I believe they're based in Texas, but most of their clients ship the tapes and drives in from other parts of the country. They may also deal with L.A. area labs (Laser Pacific?). The prices are competitive, though I'm not sure they use a laser transfer process. Last time I checked, a few years ago, they had a customized CRT, which provides less resolution and accuracy, though some people actually prefer CRTs for film transfer. And if it's only a short....
The owner of dvfilm, "MVB", posted here before, when the question of Red to 35mm transfers arose. Try searching.
