Jim,
May the company I work for use pictures of RED ONE and RED logo's in print material to advertise to our clients what RED is and that it is coming?
If so, can we get higher quality shots of the fully built rig (with Mattebox and all)? We would like to do a campain of about 4 different post-card-like pieces. So we would like a variety of images to use.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
A very good question. One that many of us would like to know the answer to.. as long as it's the one we want to hear. Maybe that's why no one has asked it yet? Plausible deniability anyone? :shifty:

I PM'ed Jarred about this some time ago. He said the following;
use of logos is on a per use basis and need to be cleared per use.. so you just gotta let us know what your thinking ahead of time.

Guys,
I think use of images of the Red Camera and use of Red logo may well be two different things. It may well do to seperate them.
I'm sure if you are buying a camera to rent then showing an image of it on your website would be contrued as fair useage, but showing the Red logo would suggest representation.... ?
Thoughts...? Jim? ... Anyone?

I believe Jim said that the use of the logo (and maybe pictures - my memory is weak on that one) on websites as long as they were made as links to www.red.com were ok.
There are 2000+ people/companies now that need to prepare their costumers for what is coming, and until we can shoot our own footage and add our own pictures of the RED ONE in action, it would help a lot to be able to use a selected few images, authorised by the RED team - on the web and in print.
Maybe add a section on the RED website with pictures for promotional use, with tags on them reading something like "picture used courtesy of RED, www.red.com", or whatever.
Please RED, let us as your costumers, make the best of our investment in your products!

I just got an email from Kelly and Ted @ RED.
Kelly says,
"At this time, I can only provide you with this logo for a website. We wish you the best of luck." - She attached a RED Logo PSD file.
Ted says,
"We are just not to the stage that I can officially authorize the use of our images on printed promotional materials. It is on our list to prepare cleared images and logos for this purpose, but with one month to shipping first cameras, all energy and focus is on that target.
The only thing we can provide you right now is a proper logo to put on your website for you to promote that you have a RED ONE coming - if you would like that, Kelly can email it to you.
I do understand your predicament being an early reservation holder, and we do very much appreciate the early faith in us and the RED program, and will bring this up in the next group meeting to discuss and formulate a proper plan, as your request is becoming more and more common."
I appreciate the focus and the drive...but its becoming more and more apparent to me that it will be a good while after development is finished before RED can put together a customer support department to handle all these odds-and-ends questions. We are going to have to just figure this out along side them. Its Exciting & Annoying depending on the day.

1st off... we aren't done with our camera. And we want to make sure pics that are used are good enough... they are not yet, IMHO. The logo we provided is fair game for the uses we have agreed to. However, we still will carefully monitor use of our logo (as you would expect) so it does NOT get used inappropriately.
We will post useable pics when we are finished and in production.
Thanks for your patience.

So Jim, who do we contact exactly to get clearance for the logo? I would like to post a graphic link to the RED website on both www.4khub.com and www.4khub.co.za, similar to the one Assimilate Inc bought on 4khub.com, normally this would be an ad, which we would charge for, but I doubt very much you would pay for it.

Hello Jim,
Well, you are in production so I'm hoping that you will be able to post some usable pics for us to start building websites along with promotional and advertising material. Like Eirik said a few post ago, it would be very helpful to have a section on the Red website with a selection of officially sanctioned images and logos that we can use. And by "very helpful" I mean vitally important.
If the Red Team is too busy squashing bugs and enabling features... are any of the original 50 willing to put some pretty pictures out here for us Johnny-come-latelies to use? A nice Creative Commons with Attribution license would be really appreciated by more than myself I'm sure.

I've been in contact with them on this. Right now, they have only authorized their logo (and it's the specific logo for Reservation Holders) to be used on websites and you have to link to their site with it.
As for business cards and print material, no go right now. They are working on the details of that and have asked that we don't use the logo on these materials.

In case some of you are thinking you can't do any publicity bear in mind that the RED logo is copyright but a picture of the camera itself can be used with just permission from the copyright holder of the photograph.
My straw poll indicates that 60% of TV/drama/doc producers haven't heard of RED yet and not all of those that have heard, would identify with the logo.
Images of RED in action in various configurations is a good start to get producers and directors on board.
Generally it is not illegal to include the logo of a product whilst pictured in use.

I think with an appropriate link to the Redsite it should be ok to use the logo. I mean, what else should we use ?

"should" as in "is legal" or as "is desirable"?
I persoanlly don't think that linking to an external site is necessarily desirable or adequate compensation for using that companys logo.
RED logo is trade marked, use it without permission for commercial use at your peril.

Mike, you´re right, of course. It´s just all we have right now to do a little PR on our future Reds. Hope Red is helping us here soon...

Jones,
I think this comes down to them having their legal situation covered. Give it a little time, I think they are working on it. For now, I think it's fine to promote Red in print material, just be careful about using Red logos. For example, you could say "We proudly use Red Digital Cinema cameras" on your business card. But what you can't do is have the Red Logo right below that. From my understanding anyway.

...if the damn logo just wouldn´t be such a great eye catcher...There is a specific logo for reservation holders ? Well, then I just have to wait a couple of more days until I have my reservation. What does that "reservation holder" look like, anyway ?

is there any chance that RED could circulate a copy of this logo among reservation holders? in one push-button global email, rather than a ton of back n forth? so that this question doesn't keep repeating? i want to put out invites to an unveiling party--this isn't really a promotion, just a fun opportunity to get local users together who might not have access to a RED camera. we just want to throw a party....

Again, the only complication comes in using the logo itself. You can advertise a party or a promo event featuring the Red camera. It's using the logo to do so that matters right now. I know it's frustrating because we all want to use the logos to market the camera, but from a legal standpoint, it's probably best to wait for Red's course of action here.
You can contact them about getting the right logo for the website. There is one you can use.
But I'm far from the final word on this. Please contact them directly in case anything changes in their policy.

How about just asking Arri what their policy is regarding their logo on print catalogs and stuff. And then do the same.

Has RED considered standardizing something like the Gif I attached (made via the Machine font that RED uses in the logo), to represent the technology without requiring the use of an official logo? Would there be any kind of issue adopting something like this immediately?
This seems a nonabrasive way to promote the RED/technology via business card or whatever without explicitly saying RED (hence the color). Like Sony's CINE ALTA 4K Logo http://www.phileweb.com/news/photo/200704/4K_logo_big.jpg which doesn't have to say "SONY":

Its not ok to just use our logo at will.. You must contact us with a sample of intended use, and we must give explicit permission to qualify use.
