Pardon me if this has been answered but I could not find this info.

I love my Oconnor 2060 HD and am looking for a lighter weight and more easily portable support system. At the same time, I want something that will be just enough for the EPIC-X. So, does anyone know how much difference in weight of decked out camera we are looking at for the EPIC compared to the RED ONE?

I will keep the 2060HD for the EPIC no matter how light the EPIC is as I love this head.

Just trying to figure out what will work for the RED now and then the EPIC later in a lighter support setup.

Thanks in advance for any comments. This forum Rocks!

Good question on weight. from some of the demo grabs of the aluminum protype... DSMC looks a LOT lighter...

We bought a Miller Arrow 55 which is barely enough for a decked out RED... but we feel the 55 will be killer for EPIC

EDIT: This was my 500th post. Wow.

Remember that there is a lot happening inside an EPIC brain. Like 5K at 100fps. It may be compact, but it will be a mini-tank, but certainly less than an R1.

Thanks Tim and Jim!

I figured the Epic would be loaded. I am leaning towared the Oconnor 1030 for a lighter rig but have not actually worked with one.

Is that about the same as the Miller Arrow 55 in heft?

EDIT: OK, I just looked and it appears that the 1030 head is within a pound of the miller 55 and the carbon fiber 25l tripod is within about a pound of the miller tripod. I like my 2060. Any comments on the 1030 HD from anyone?

I own a 1030HDS modified with extra sectors for increased drag (highly recommended if you're planning to ride the edge of the maximum weight). It is an essential part of my lightweight "doc" package. It fits in one case and is easy to carry. The case's handle is placed so that you carry the tripod perfectly balanced, a very thoughtful design that extends how far/long you can carry it! I went with the 35L legs with the quick deployment feature, not as well known in film circles but very handy for 1 man band situations (or 1 woman band). There are many heads that are great for professional use. If you find a fluid head is suitable and you appreciate your 2060, I would bet you would only be truly satisfied with other OCONNOR heads. The 1030 is on the max edge with most Red set ups I configure, and with the RPPs it's evens bit beyond max. At some point I intend on adding a studio support kit to my package, based around the 2575, so I can accomodate such wonderful lenses and larger (most) zooms. In conclusion, I LOVE MY 1030HDS!!!

If that includes all the necessary modules to make it work(Lens Mount, Spacer, Recording Module, Pro Cinema I/O Module, Battery Module, Redmote or Redhandle) then, hell yeah!

MG,

Thanks for that info. That really helps! I am good with something decently light that will still work for the EPIC eventually. The 2060 is awesome but wow!, a lot of mass to move around.

I am looking to go with the 1030 at this point. I saw the 35l quick setup. Guess it is time to visit the shop and play to see what works best.

Thanks again for the input!

Good to know and thanks for sharing RED trade secrets :wink5:

As for Miller 55 Arrow, we just liked its overall portability and lightweight.

2060 is a great head, but talk about a tank. 2030 is a sweet tripod as well.

Horses for courses when it comes to tripods. I suggest finding a retailer
in your area and testing them, they all have certain nuances.

Ah, and I was just starting to gain enough muscles in my arms and chest shooting the R1 handheld. Maybe I'll be able to throw the epic in the air, clap 3 times and continue shooting, Rocky Balbo pushup style!

Does this mean that only the brain will weigh less that the R1, or that an EPIC, configured with the modules that give it the same functionality as a R1 would weigh less than a R1.

It looks like, and please correct me if I am wrong, that it might weigh a bit more than a R1 once you attach the modules (like CF reader, HD-SDI I/O, etc) that would allow for the same functionality as an R1.

That EPIC brain must have some serious amount of heat sink in it to keep it cool as well.

ASICs run cooler :-)

I really hope Epic will weigh significanlty less as a working package than R1. R1 is not fun to handhold for any length of time!
