So, I may be putting 2 & 2 together and getting five, but this interview piqued my interest

unless they're shooting Viper to S.two, is this one of the other 2 movies that we don't know the name of yet?

Sounds suspiciously Redish to me.

Sony F 23 and codex , no red there.

Since the F23 has an attached HDCAM-SR VTR, it seems odd that they are recording to Codex instead just for some marginal improvement from uncompressed recording versus the mild 2:1 compression of HDCAM-SR. Unless they simply want to make the camera physically smaller by leaving off the HDCAM-SR VTR section all the time.

I heard a rumor that David Tattersal tested several cameras for the movie (not necessarily the RED though) but found the Arri-D20 to be practically a 125 ASA and thus left it off the list of contenders.

125?! I would have thought it was better than that. That just goes to show the superiority of the Mysterium. I would like to see similar ASA tests that have been done with RED on the Arri-D20, Viper, and Genesis.

Viper is rated at about 320.

Many of these digital cinema cameras are in the 320 to 500 ASA range at 0db. Just that the Arri-D20 is particular noisy unless rated slower. Some people tell me 250 ASA but others say even lower for that camera, but my point is that the D20 seems to be the slowest of the bunch.

Most people find the Genesis and F23 to be fairly fast, practically speaking in terms of noise level vs. exposure. I've seen some tests of the F23 that show the noise at +6db to +9db to be similar to the F900 at 0db.

they are shooting with 5 F23 - I think SRW 1 on board - extra caravan for batteries...

Today I attended a demo of the F23 at AMV in New York.

Jeff Cree from Band Pro was on hand and mentioned they were using the F23 on Speed Racer. Apparently, they are using the Codex to get stuff into editorial faster and using the SRW-1 tapes as a master copy.

Cree claimed 13 stops of dynamic range on the F23 when using the log capture mode.

I find the camera to be really overweight.

Jonathon Smiles is the man on the block on this one, if anyone wants the info. I'm sure he won't mind the attention :innocent:

Doesn't seem too big to someone who normally shoots 35mm... rather similar in size to an Arricam ST with a 400' mag.

Hey David,

Have you tried handholding the F23? I found with the Arri D20 it was quite similar in size to a Panaflex with rear mounted mag but man was that thing heavy. I pulled a muscle in my forearm wielding it!

Speed Racer is shooting on F23 to HDCAM-SR and Codex with some NAC high speed.

I have been involved with supplying kit to the production.
