View Full Version : S16 Redzoom - who wants one??
How about Red design a lightweight S16 redzoom with the Birger Eng guys that provides for manual/auto switching on iris and focus as well as servo zoom control.
i.e. a B4 HD lens ramped up for true RED 2k RAW (without any adapters etc)
10-110mm??
Price point?? 7,500??
It would be a winner for all the ENG/EFP crew and great for solo operators.
Who would be keen??

Sounds like a winner to me!

That would be sweet. With full integration with the Red grip and inside the lens ND filters.
However, Red are so committed to 4k, I don't believe they will devote energy and time to something limited to 2k.
A shame though. With HD broadcasting only starting in europe, over 95% of the audiovisual production will finish in HD.
Cheers,
Damien
PS Let's see what the miniRed (Red Two ?) has to offer ? I think that will be the ultimate HD camera. Although personally, I like the do it all possibilities of the Red One. I am however trying to make it small. I bought a Zeiss 12-120 S16 lens for that purpose.

The only problem that I see with targeting a S16 zoom is the 11:1 range specified in this thread. This is going to make this a much slower and softer lens than either a shorter range or, in my opinion a better choice, a set of really fast primes (t 1.3). As much as I like the full sensor 4k capability of the RED ONE, I see just as much use for the 2k windowed configuration.

It'd be cool, but like Earthling said, I doubt they'll spend time and resources developing lenses for 2K, when their mantra has always been "4K or death!"
Plus, $7500 for an S16mm lens, when the RED 18-85 S35mm zoom would have been less than $10K? I wouldn't pay that much for the S16 when a few bucks more gives me the whole enchilada. Now, if it only cost $3500, then it'd be another story...

Yes, actually the lens I would really like to have is the Canon 8-64mm, 12mm not being very wide. It's a sweet lens, opens at T2.4, like my Zeiss 12-120 (actually an Optex converted 10-100). They're both supposed to be quite good. I'm waiting for my Red to test mine.
A shorter range might be a little better, but I think for a S16 zoom to be successful it needs to cover a wide range, at least equivalent to the Canon. And a 10x lens is not necessarily soft, although it will be a little slower.

Well I think for documentary hand held shooting we will need Super16 or rather 2K lenses, pulling focus in 35mm is not going to be much fun in these situations.

But can't one do the same thing with the 35mm lens if you're shooting in 2K windowed (cropped) mode? The DOF and field of view would be the same. Uusing a 35mm lens on a 2K area will look and perform the same as a 16mm lens on a 2K area, right? Evin? Gibby?

That's correct, but the advantage of a dedicated S16 lens is the weight and coverage, you can have a much wider to much more tele zoom lens in a much more compact package if you don't try to cover the full 35mm sensor.

also 16mm lens should have higher resolution ( resolving power) then 35mm lens ..
the smaller the format the higher the resolution ( resolving lines) needed ..
IE: you'll see most 35mm lens that have 75-100 lines resolution and are considered excellent ...
16mm lens that have 140-200 lines are consdered excellent ...
