Hi there,
It seems that Dreamworks is moving to all features being released in 3D, stereoscopic.

This means that we'll need 2 cameras if we're wanting to attempt this ourselves, BUT, learning about 3D is VERY difficult, any ideas? Links?
Cheers

Some "3-D" movies are shot with a single camera. After the fact you might want to convert a Hollywood blockbuster into 3-D. Then in post, you can undergo an expensive process to make 3-D out of that. You rotoscope out the different layers, and then paint in the holes that are missing in each layer. Sort of like the "Kids in the picture"/"Ken Burns" effect (you can google that).
As it was explained to me (and I didn't quite understand it), it is very difficult to get fine strands of hair looking right in 3-D. Something to do with the opacity of the hair/layer (where the hair is) and/or how the edge opacity blends.
Or... you can just have parts of the movie in 3-D. Which is apparently what Superman Imax 3D does?
2- Obviously, shooting with 3 cameras is a much better approach.

So, would that be 4-D?

Only if you got the time.
I think red is a great candidate for bioptic lenses for recording 2 images side by side. A RED3D plugin for REDCINE would automatically create the file stereoscopic split. Even a module plugin for in camera preview. Yeah. that'd be good.

I've been thinking about that for a while, but without the picture there was some people who never understood what I said. :)
But that would only be good for 2K.
Maybe if you have it recording in 4K at 48fps, you could have the left image on the sensor and then the right image on the sensor. It's looks weird though. Ghosty and with smooth motion for 24fps.
When will RED develop a camera that can truly see in 3D and not just an illusion. One that will record 180 degrees and in a 3D model. Then texturized by a 32K sensor. Project it in a theatre on a really big stage or something: a hologram. You can walk behind it and see it from a different angle. Gee that would be hard to do. Not only would you have to create a 3D image of what's around you but what's behind something, but then how would be an acceptable way of showing it? Whoa! It doesn't make sense!

Split frame 3D was done on 35mm film (remember The Sterwdreses) but the disadvantage is each image only gets half the resolution of whatever camera is being used. A Los Angeles based production company has designed a 3D shooting rig for smaller video cameras that is much more user friendly then the older huge rigs. Also two camera rigs allow for the adjustment of inter ocular distance and convergence (and they can be coupled) which is something that can't be done with double lens split frame.

Intraocular is the key, and the big bugaboo is getting the two sensors/lenses really, really close.

Sorry, typo! I meant to say 2 cameras.

pacehole, ha ha.
Aren't I the funniest person and most clever to think that up?
And I'm not the least bit sarcastic.
