I came across this forum while surfing and would like to find an answer to a problem that I have.

I need to know the name of the following device so I can buy it.

I have a TV Ears IR listening device. It's for hard of hearing people like me.

I connect the IR part to the wall plug-in to activate it. Then I plug in a single plug-in cable into the IR device and plug in the other end of it into the TV OUT dual (or single) plugins on the TV and listen to TV through the wireless headset. Neat. I can't live without it.

Problem: While listening to TV, you cannot hear other conversation in the room. The IR unit has only one plug-in for listening.

I want to utilize the single plug-in with a Y type of device so that I can plug in the TV signal cable to watch TV and also plug in an (alternate) microphone device (which comes with the set) so that I can listen to the conversation in the room, while watching TV.

Question: I need to know the name of this 'Y-Device" that will allow me to
use one port for two uses. Any suggestion as to where to buy it will also be helpful. You can see the unit on tvears.com.

Can you help me? Thanks Francey :help:

I think you should go to a hi-fi store and explaine your problem, they should be able to help you. Good luck.

Go to Radioshack and ask for:
(1) RCA Y Adapter. (1 Female -> 2 Male)
(1) RCA Female -> Mini Stereo Female adapter

Plug the RCA Female -> Mini Stereo Female adapter into one of the two ends of the Y adapter. Plug the microphone into the ministereo port. Plug the second end of the RCA Y adapter into your VCR/Cable box what have you.

The RCA Female -> Mini stereo female adapter may not exist in which case you will need to use a RCA Female -> Mini Stereo Male adapter and then also purchase a Mini Stereo Female >< Mini Stereo Female adapter to convert.

If you turn turn the volume on the TV Speakers you should be able to avoid any echos however I don't expect the microphone quality to be very good at all without some sort of pre-amp.

I wouldn't expect any of this to work very well at all but that's what you would need if you wanted to try.

The better approach if you have a computer handy is to run a Stereo Mini -> RCA Stereo Male into the line in on your computer from the cable box. Adjust the relative volumes with a mic in the "Mic" port on the sound card. And then finally run another Stereo Mini -> RCA Female from the line out into your TV Ears cable.

Thank you for the input.

I went down to Radio Shack, brought the TV ears with me, presented the
problem and the suggestions and he provided the solution.
