View Full Version : Why are we deciding?

I am going to keep this short and to the point:

Reading all the threads:

Am told that NO MATTER what format you shoot at, RGB or REDCODE
You will HAVE to transcode or do something for clients to edit.

So it's unlikely that 1080p will be that much faster than RedCode.

REDCINE will "develop" the footage in any flavor you wish.. All the way down to 480p (Including 720 and 1080 of course)

720 and 1080 RGB will NOT be a turnkey format for your client. Therefore not a big difference from REDCode RAW.

Ok.. So what exactly are we deciding?

Nothing really if you think about it. It has all been decided anyway. It's just logical that you shoot at the highest available resolution and then convert to any size you want.

Well, Redcode as a blessed FCP format was announced at NAB.
In that case you would not need to convert anything.

When Editing, the only realtime process 1080P RGB needs is decompression and RGB>YUV conversion.
4k RAW would need decompression, demosaic, LUT/whitebalance, 4k > 1080p scale etc.

Unless they optimize the crap out of it, there is a big chance 1080p would be much smoother, and it would be possible to have full res realtime output over a AJA or blackmagic card, I wonder if that is within reach with the RAW workflow.

I don't think anything has been mentioned on the quality of the Redquick proxies yet, only the end resolution.

Again, it all depend on the speed of the 4k RAW workflow. If it's fast enough, only 35mm format high framerate recording would suffer from the removal of the RGB options.

Anders,

You nailed it.. It's kind of funny with you think about it.. Everyone's been throwing out their vote, and the one thing, the ONLY think we really need to know in order to make an informed decision is the one thing NO ONE knows.

All this debate, while nice, was kind of pointless.

Jim asks "so do you want 720/1080 to stay, or do you want 2k?"

the next post should have been:

I dunno Jim... How long does it take to transcode 720/1080 RGB vs. REDcode 2k in REDCine?

If it's not that much of a difference in time, then this "decision" is a no-brainer. If it's 4x longer, then it's still a no brainer.

Bottom line: We need to know the speed comparisons. If they are trying to make this decision BEFORE release, then they need to do this and post the results on a 1min clip shot a number of ways... Then we can look at the times it takes to do.

THEN we can make a reasonable informed vote.. Until then, this is a waste of computer space.. IMHO

Jay
PS: This debate and/or choice is not about resolution.. It's about time/speed
