I posted already but it seems noone is really interested outside Europe.
We have just finished photography on the first feature for theatrical release in Switzerland shot on Red One with Zeiss new Compact Primes 21-85. You find pictures and making of films on our website: www.derböseonkel.ch

Don´t judge too hard. You forgot it´s only the making of, not the movie and you also forgot that all the other movies work. We had lot´s of fun and the pictures of the dailies look really good and show the Red´s capabilities.

Can you tell us a little about your experiences with the zeiss compact primes? I'm thinking of buying. How do they behave when compared to Red Primes or superspeed?
Thanks,
Daan

Hi Daan,
the Compact primes we used were from 21 to 85mm. The 18mm was not available yet and so that was what we used. The overall quality of the housing is outstanding and as you would expect from Zeiss. The focus and the iris are smooth and work wonderful. All lenses tend to get softer when opened wide but they are sharp when stopped down a little and the bouquet is very nice. I found T4-5.6 be the sweet spot. They do breathe when focused and it is visible. There was no distortion to the corners but I admit I did not check them in a chart test environment. Especially with Red the maximum aperture is low when you go towards wide angles (18/T3.6; 21/T2.9) then you go to T2.1 and the 50 and 85 are really bright with T1.5. I did not compare them against any other lens but now having my own MarkI Zeiss Set I miss the spread on the scales that I had with the CP. I definetely would compare them to the Red primes since T1.8 is an argument. I find sensivity of more importance with modern lenses and shooting digital as is sharpness in most cases and to a certain degree.
I rated my Red at 200 ISO and that compares to the experience collegues made with the rating. In the end when you protect highlights sometimes it really comes to 320 but using my meter is was a rare item since you mostly crushed the blacks and lost shadow detail. So stop is an issue.
The outer diameter is that of the S4 I guess 114mm. Zeiss has told me they know the stop is an issue and they are working on it. We would have loved more detailed witness marks in some cases.
I will write a detailed report and Zeiss is already working on some issues like aperture.
