How is it going everyone? I have a trailer here of an indie film made by a group of college graduates. We have been working on it for a year now and we are now in post production. Any kind of feedback would be awesome.

The trailer is at this link

I grew to like it. For me it was the cult group about halfway into the trailer that peaked my interests. I felt that the first half reminded me too much of a watered down Donnie Darko. I thought some of the color correction and lighting choices were a little flat but there seems to be something there worth watching. The story grew on me and now I'm interested. Is this a short or a feature?

Hey guys,

I'm the Director.

We didn't use any lenses, all we had was a barebones HVX, so this might be the flat feeling your refering too. Honestly, I would have loved it if we could have gotten a Letus and some nice Zeiss DigiPrimes, heck I would have loved a RED, but we worked with what we had. We tried to push the HVX to its limits, we were almost always on the full telephoto range of the camera, trying desperatly to get that shallow DOF. Plus, its also hard to be extravigant when your on a $8,000 budget, and still trying to finish up your undergrad. :001_cool:

A majority of our lighting was from Home Depot lights, as well as natural light. We also had an Omni light kit with 4 650w lights that we used a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. The movie does seem similar to Donnie Darko in ways. However, it only has slight similarities, but the bulk of the movie is unique to this project, in the way it deals with the notion of going back and learning from your past mistakes, and the other things you can do while in "The Mercury Cycle".

The color correction is not final for some of those scenes, we are still toying with ideas. But for the most part the color pallet and feel has been thought out from day one. The DP and I made a custom profile in the HVX that kept the colors more muted, but selectively accentuated red and maroon. These are two big color motifs in the film.

Ultimately we are going to try a few different things in the CC phase as it is still new to us, but for the most part we are satisfied with our color selection.

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated!

Thank you, very, very much!

We had no major support for any aspect of this film. That being said, we had but not choice to make our own trailer. While we are completely satisfied with the trailer and the attention it has brought us, we seek to hire a professional to construct our official, theatrical trailer.

I can understand how the story/concept may be misleading judging from our current trailer. I have no doubt that when we release our theatrical trailer, people will see a whole other side of the film i.e.: the cult.
