Dont want to troll or anything please don´t take it wrong. I really like that there is any progress as in real pictures and systems with an actual sensor inside (I guess the hardest part about the whole package) but there are only Epics at IBC right? No sign of any flavour of scarlet anywhere? Did I miss something anywhere about them? Just curious as I am waiting for a Scarlet S35 (and I can wait longer if it gets done right in the end).

The earlier prototypes had a flat top. Now I see a curved part on top. This makes it more complicated to mount a plate on top for steadicam low mode.

I see that heat management has been beefed up. As for the bump topside, I doubt it will create a problem. Or, hang it upside down and invert the footage. Board stack heat allowance maybe?

Hi Falk, from what I can tell the main difference between the Epic and Scarlet is in the ASICs and they aren't ready yet and aren't at IBC.
My guess is the only difference between what Jim and Jarred have at IBC and the Scarlet is that the Scarlet casing is supposed to be slightly smaller.
All of those modules will work with Scarlet as well.

09-11-2009, 01:46 PM
Thanks Justin. The ASICS part makes sense.
Another thing I noticed on the pictures is all these holes in the body - none of which where present in the rendering - as others noted that is probably for heat flow. I am a tiny bit concerned about dirt, dust and water spilling in there. I liked the idea of a pretty tight rugged box - now its more like a fragile laptop where on drop of water in the wrong place can cause extreme havoc or too much dust and it finds it way to the sensor!?
Blair S. Paulsen
09-11-2009, 01:53 PM
Not to be rude, but does anyone out there think that the Red Team would build a camera that easily allowed dirt, dust, water or anything else to get in? Really?
I know there are plenty of haters out there but let's not go down FUD road with the Epic before its even released.
Cheers- #19

The RED One has heat vents as well and we've used it in dusty and wet environments without any problems. The way RED designs it there aren't circuit boards right behind those vents, all of the fragile parts are well protected. I expect the DSMC will be the same.

Wouter Verberkt (http://www.reduser.net/forum/member.php?u=24947) nice first post. Thanks for the picts.
Just a tangent: I think Jannard has so much vision. I remember the community reaction when he announced the new format of Epic and Scarlet. The room went silent for a moment. Reactions were mixed.
Fast forward 2009. Today is the first tangible look/see at the new EPIC. The pleasing smiles have returned, faith has been restored. Just goes go to show that Jannard has VISION. Without vision, the effort is just pedestrian. The pedestrian awards this year will have to go to Canon and Panasonic. Decent offerings, but pedestrian.
Faith is the belief in the unseen. Just tipping my hat AGAIN to Jannard and Team for inspiring work. Despite the lackluster economy, we have gotten alot of gifts from Red this year, outstaning glass, improved workflow, better color science, new camera builds. Your efforts are truly appreciated. (ie. satisfied customer)

Having seen early prototype mock-ups - I have to say when I had the chance to spend a little time with Jarred earlier today with the new prototype - it completely surpassed my expectations.
I LOVE the dual CF module that allows recording to span from one card to another and allows you to "hot-swap" while shooting. When the 32G CFs ship - this is going to be just awesome. I was also struck by how small the brain is with the EVF/LCD / CF module on the side - which is all you need to shoot - PERFECT for the forthcoming mid-sized ET 3D rig. I also dig the fact that the EVF connection is the SAME connection for the LCD and you can run THREE at any time. 1 EVF + 2 LCDs, 2EVFs + 1LCD, ETC. - also cool that you can power from Red Brick, or smaller batteries in a module - or battery in the handle.
I don't think I can find words for how excited I am about this camera and how impressed and proud I am of the entire RED team.
EPIC-X is going to CRUSH.

Well ... you know how it goes ... everything subject to change. But EPIC is just waiting for ASIC. First spin due in about a week. Fingers crossed. Jim did a great Q&A - really expressed how much FUN he (and the RED team) are having on this wild ride.
I love his line "yesterday I knew nothing, today I know a little, tomorrow I might be dangerous".

Hey that's great !
Do you know if it will this time be possible to have different settings on each one ? I mean, for example, 1:1 magnification on the assistant's LCD, clean signal in the EVF and false color in the 3rd LCD ? + TC / file name overlay on one of the HD-SDI outs ?

Yes they work but you have get a convert module because the scarlet is thinner than the epic!

For those who were at IBC, do you know if it's possible to ditch the CF module on the side of the camera and just use the thin "1 space" CF module that can be clamped to the back? It looks like the one on the side has gotten pretty bulky and I'd love to just add some non-significant depth to the camera instead. Thanks.

09-12-2009, 04:13 PM
will there be the option to have false colour and edge highlights on separate assignable buttons? At the moment they are both in colour so it's one or the other.
And will frame guides and time code be able to go through HDSDI when both the EVF and LCD are in use. It's a pain having to tape off LCD directors monitors.
These are 2 things i'm really hoping the Epic will do.

Good to know. The pro I/O module looks huge and would defeat the purpose of removing the side CF module (I remember there used to be an LCD port on the top of the unit itself, but this may have changed). Still, nice to have at least a couple of options.

A camera control module with iris motor interface that streams to a realtime decoder that outputs to broadcast standards for multi camera OB event. Image control along the lines of a Sony MSU-950 and RCP-750. Maybe usable for on the fly colour looks onset without sneaker net to DIT.

Can the back CF and/or battery modules be flipped or mirrored?
II was thinking in terms of easy access for a side by side 3D rig.

Edit: nevermind, the cf card slot would easily be mirrored since it can be placed on either side of the cam probably

silly questions : how will red one cradle + batteries + hard disk adapt to Epic-X ? Matter of money, of course, but also the fact that on my red one, the whole thing was so modular I could use them to counterbalance the weight of very long/heavy lenses very efficiently...

Red has already stated that a V-plate adapter to use the RED Brick batteris are possible. One of the renders had a brick mounted to the back side of a shoulder pad, ostensibly using an umbilical to an adapter, and balancing out the weight of the brain up front.
And a mock-up shows a RED-Drive/RAM clamped to a EPIC:

Really, it should be trivial to have an EPIC/Scarlet module that can provide the ports necessary to use most of the previous accessories.

Good lord.
If the epric can be that small that i'm really excited to see just how compact we'll be able to see the scarlet.
I'm ready and waiting to buy mine :)

Jim,
I have an idea for a module.. I hope no one gets mad at me for this:
About Modules that can record in different codecs? Say for instance a PROREZ module?
This way a CF card can be used and the camera can record DIRECTLY into the Clients Native Codec.
R3D is a wondeful codec, I am merely suggesting this for those people that would need to deliever footage to a client same day in a file format that would require no transcoding.
Of course the real power would be the ability to order the module, and select the codecs you want the ability to capture in.
I don' t know if this is a bad thought or not, but it sure would be useful when going after work that may not otherwise want to use a RED.

The earlier prototypes had a flat top. Now I see a curved part on top. This makes it more complicated to mount a plate on top for steadicam low mode.
The prototypes have had the curved air vent for quite awhile now. Here's a picture from back in April when they showed the cameras in Vegas:

The original CG renders had a flat top, so I'm sure they wouldn't be putting it there if it wasn't necessary. With lots of processing power comes a lot of heat!
