View Full Version : What limits the maximum framerate of the RED?

hi all,

Reading through the mushroom cloud of posts on 720/1080 etc got me thinking about the limiting factors for high framerates:

Sensor
FPGA
Storage

I assumed that it was storage, since that's what limits the phantomHD/65: you have to record to RAM.

But the more I'm reading the more I think I'm wrong :)

So my question:

Assume that I would like to be able to push the framerate as high as possible using a RED and money is no object. When I reach the threshold where no further increase in speed is possible, which of the above three factors is limiting me?

For those that may interpret this as trolling (some people always read the worst into things), it certainly is not:

I'm already (and this takes a lot) _amazed_ at the level of functionality being promised and delivered for a first (well, or any) generation camera which is an order of magnitude less expensive than anything remotely comperable. I'm interested because I want to satisfy my nerdy curiosity :nerd:

The sensor clock speed. At 4K it is 60fps, the spec we have quoted since day one. That is why if you scale down from 4K, you still can only get 60fps. If you crop (or window) there is the ability to achieve higher frame rates.

hi Jim,

Exactly what I was looking for :) Danke.

Ah... that's great info. Thanks Jim.
