August is finally here!!!!
So according to the updated schedule we should see cameras rolling out and hitting the streets anytime over the next several weeks, definitely by the end of the month! After watching this project since late 2005 early 2006 its hard to believe that the time is nearly here. I anticipate there will be loads of feedback and testing from the community as this camera is put through its paces, and pushed to the max. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.
Kendal... you're 5 days late :)

It will be nice to have the discussion turn to people actually using their RED cameras and hopefully that will alleviate the "smart ass boredom" on this forum. 5 days too late - jeez.
I am pumped too, Kendall!

Production camera schedule:
Serial numbers 1 (mine)-50 August 30th (50 units)
Whenever someone pastes that schedule, I always read it and see "Serial numbers: 1 (mine)" and think - "holy cow, that guy has #1?" before waking up 2 seconds later to the realization that Jim was the one to write the schedule and no one has removed that part yet. :) I was about to be mighty envious of you Kendal!

As I was coming to my office (for some late night work/reduser reading !!) I was thinking, "hey, isn't the first batch to be delivered soon". Well Kendal, you may be five days late, but you're ahead of me, only for this thread though ! I get mine in November, if the schedule doesn't change.
Anyhow, I was wondering, when does production actually start ? How long does it take to build those fifty cameras in the first batch, 20, 15, 10 days. I would say 15, since the second batch of fifty arrives 15 days later. So that would mean production is starting in nine days ?! Holy cow, things must be pretty craze at Red HQ, although I guess they've been pretty crazy for the past 18 months.
So Jim, will you be exhibiting Red One #1 at IBC ?
I'm pretty excited to think the first production cameras are going to be released. I can't imagine the buzz at Red. Thank you Red team it's been a thrilling ride, and it's only the begining !
Cheers,
Damien

Ask this question on August 30th and let Jim and the Red Team do their thing between now and then. Any additional delay will certainly be worth the reason IMO.

I'd rather be told now that we've been bumped another 2-6 weeks than to find out at the last minute. I'm all for not picking the Red fruit before it's ready!

I'd guess that the final body is done and the hold up is actually in software and last minute hardware pieces. I would assume that it does not take to long to assemble the camera.
Based on the rest of the delivery list I think it will take about a week or less to assemble 50 camera's. You'd have to leave some time for each unit to be quality controlled and tested before it leaves RED HQ.
Mu guess is the packaging will be quite beautiful too. I doubt they will "brown bag it".

I'd rather get my hands on it now with minimal features. It seems to be working on features, I think it would work for me.

If I recall correctly, there was a thirty day advance notice to arrange for payment mentioned at one point. If this is still the plan, then some of the earliest reservation holders will be the "first to know" when its getting closer.
Finger's crossed.

there is no chance that the camera will come out this month.
they would be making more of a fanfare. anyone expecting anything other than a delay is gonna be disappointed.
i want this camera now, but i know it going to be along wait.

I suspect that the August time frame may have slipped a bit, but a lengthy delay isn't something that I would expect either. Given that they have beta's running, production (with a limited feature set) shouldn't be too far off.
I am certain that those who have time specific deadlines are considering their contingencies but holding on to hope that their camera will be available in time for their project (I know that I am). I have an episodic pilot that we planned to shoot with the RED as its anticipated time savings plays heavily into our per show production calculations. As this is still all speculation on our part, we really were hoping to prove the system out while shooting the pilot. If we have to switch to our backup camera for the pilot, it won't provide information on that part of our schedule.
Fingers still crossed!

My advice for what it's worth...
Don't get emotionally invested in the schedule until cameras start shipping.

I think they'll do everything they can to finish the first production cameras before IBC starts...

How bad do you think Jim wants to be able to say he has a shipping product at IBC? I'll bet he can taste it.
Perhaps we should get the Red Leader a nice hunk of the best chocolate we can find and send it to him with a note that says "open upon shipment of the first production RedOne - with gratitude from the RedUser community". There are some excellent shops in Amsterdam for Belgian chocolate...
