The better one of them records four hours of 1920x1080 AVCHD on a 30GB drive.

It comes out in Japan on 30th of August and in all other parts of ther world on October. Selling price for the better model will be 1170 Euro, converted from the Japan price.

do you happen to know the data rate of avchd it records? If it is high enough it would be better than hdv

Maximum bitrate: 15 Mbps

As 30gb is equal to 60 minutes of full HD 1920X1080 (and not 1440X1080) compressed to Hitachi Blu-ray Disc (BD) Camcorder.

It seams to me that it has in total twice as much information caputred as HDV... Now this does not mean a lot, final picture quality depends also on the compression method...

To be continued.

Ooops! Sorry....not 1 hour but 4 hours for 30 giga... So it should be 1/2 of HDV... but still compression method is important....

Sorry.

Low End? Not really.. but the cams chip isn't that great.

Chip is the same as the HV20's, right? Not bad if you have a lot of light.

I think I'd go with the HV20 for now though - AVCHD and hard drives will definitely surpass it soon but at the moment the bit rate is just a tad on the marginal side. I don't think you get much of an improvement (if at all) in exchange for the increased editing hassle. This may change in the future, of course!

Hi Bruce

I found this quote:

"The 5.3 megapixels CMOS sensor offers 2.07 megapixels (effective) for video mode (16x9)"

I'm not sure, but I ordered the HV20, some say that HDV is better at the moment, but this could change with the Hitachi. There are no tests yet though, so I stick with Canon, I know that with a HV20 I buy quality.

But there is much chance that HDV will become obsolete in the future. Even Canon went this route with the HG10 now.

But there are interesting things happening for low cost indies and to a certain degree if prices halve they make for this specific group a RED almost obsolete in conjunction with a SGpro or something.. But that's my point of view.

You know that I've tested the HV20 with an SGpro? Works really well. In fact, I ordered my own SGpro a few months ago - arrives next week! I can't wait! The rest of my rig is ready - my homemade high-res monitor, shoulder pad, grips, etc. Just need a FF and matte box... looking at either RedRock or CVB for those.

No, I didn't. I was also thinking about it, but a editing solution is more important to me at this point. I will order a 20" iMac and buy 4gb ram somewhere else.

What kind of step ring did you use for it?

To me the question is more like: Shall I start saving for a RED or use a SGpro? If you keep in mind that the RED will not be shipped before next year if you place an order and about the camcorders that are out there next April (with full HD as standart and perhaps even bigger sensors), this becomes very tricky. Maybe I will go the SGpro-route instead of saving for a RED and end up by not having the money for it anyway.

Depends on what you do, Muroshi. If you go for the SGpro, then keep the Red in mind and try to get things like matte boxes, etc that would work with the Red later. I have been going for lights and old Nikon lenses (although with all the developments with Birger it's a bit difficult to figure out what'll be best for Red - the Red lenses themselves also seem very good value). And I've been building my monitor to work with the Red too. The theory is to buy things so that that there's only a $2000 or so penalty to getting a HV20 + SGpro now - make it so that everything else you buy can work with the Red too...

Be aware there is quite a long waiting list with the SGpro too.
