If the extreme IV can already handle the data rate at half the price.. the 8gb extreme iv costs around 160, i see little point in spending twice the amount of money on this.
I have to admit though, this ducati version is pretty slick!

You can tell it's faster because there's a motorcycle on it.

I thought you just put Ducati in the title of your post to make me look, but it's actually TRUE. :)
Thanks,

Ingenious marketing... Maybe. But I wonder how much of the cost is going toward licensing fees to Ducati? I'm also ready to order some RED branded CF cards -- make mine 16GB please. :)

I'd almost rather buy two 16GB cards than one 32GB card. Cheaper, and I don't have all my eggs in one basket. I love the idea of constantly backing up in the field from solid-state media.
But, yes... 32GB RED cards would rock!
You can tell its faster because its red.

I had my mind made up long ago, when I found out CF cards could handle 4k! I would like to ask if there will be a loop rec. function for the CF cards? That would be the icing on the cake for me.

The Red team have only vouched for 24fps to CF.. If this memory allows 25fps and (for pal and cinema the slight slowmo) 30fps it will not matter if it is more expensive...

Don't forget, if you go the Compact Flash route, you'll need an uber-expensive "deck" to read those cards. Just like HDCAM. :)
http://www.lexar.com/readers/pro_udma_reader.html
Firewire 800, and a bank-breaking $79.99 US...
BTW, anyone remember the FCP editing demo at the NAB Apple booth... the little sample Ducati commercial with the line, "... it's a Ducati" over and over and over... I still feel a bit ill when I hear that name because of that demo...

Although that is just a reader. I can't find any high speed CF writers available yet, and it would be nice to have a two slot reader/writer for cloning cards.

I think it would be nice to have a double slot on the camera. This would instantly allow for long recording times. A simple tally light to let you know a card is full and be replaced would be all you need.
Switch on the fly would be great.

Although it is called a reader doesn't it write too? they talk about read/write speed in the blurb.

Has Red stated what capacity CF cards they'll be providing from the outset? Obviously 8GB will be there, what about 16MB?

I have heard that RED is planning to offer their own brand of fast CF card. This may help us all as a giant bulk order from them will only serve to help us all.
The cards will only get faster and cheaper with time so I guess RED will be ensuring cards of the correct speed and reliability. (I am guessing that is their aim).
It would be good if they started securing CF card orders as if we all bought about 20-50 CF cards off the bat we could be sure to maybe get a price break.
I'm hope this is coming, but they are getting ready for the first release and enabling features in the subsequent months so we will wait and see.

Red has said thier cards will probably be the most affordable, we'll see. There are no 16GB 300x cards available from other vendors yet, but they are coming.

Well,
I think you might only get about 4 16 gig cards on there and you might still need a card reader that will interface with the ipod. NOt sure you can do it without a computer in between. If you need a computer in between then you might want to back up to a larger firewire drive.

Yeah David, trust me I wouldn't backup to an iPod! Check out my other thread on the Nexto product though, that represents a far more interesting option and I only thought about doing a bit of research into such a product after jokingly looking into the iPod option above.

Only problem with the Ducati cards would be that sweet Italian V-twin duck sound they make - definitely going to need a blimp for the camera when using them :)

I'll be listening to that sound for the next two weeks as I hit the road for my anual summer road trip. The east coast and upper New York State.
