Sorry if there's already a thread. I bet there is but I just can't see it.
But there are new iMacs, aluminum with glass screens (whether you want it to be or not it's always glossy...)
The best you can possibly get it in is:
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme
4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory
24-inch 1920 x 2000 glossy LCD

I like tha fact it's 1TB on a consumer computer! 4GBs of RAM is nice too. I want one to edit HDV on.

Will the new top of the line (dual 2.8 with 4GB of ram) iMacs be enough power to edit Red footage? Will you be able to edit some footage but not all (Redcode vs. 4k, etc)?

I'm sure you could edit some 4k Redcode RAW footage in FCP 6.x with that setup.

The fastest i/o on these guys is firewire 800 (1394b), not sure if that is a dedicated bus or sharing with other peripherals. Firewire 800 fast enough to easily handle Redcode?

Yes. 4k Redcode RAW is less then 30MB/sec.
Just plug the RED-DRIVE into iMac via Firewire 800, copy media onto the iMac's internal SATA drives, or even drop clips directly from the RED-DRIVE onto the FCP 6.x* timeline. No extra gear or software needed.
*Note: we are still waiting for an FCP update with additional realtime support for Redcode RAW.

So would you recommend getting the 1TB drive so you could edit off the internal drive, or can I edit off an external drive connected via FW800?
Will there be a difference editing off the internal drive vs. and external connected via FW800?

The internal drive is SATA so it's faster. With that said, not many editors choose to put their media on the system drive. If your system drive/os were to become corrupted for some reason your media is possibly toast. It's the safer practice to keep your os and media on separate drives. If Redcode will work just fine on the FW800 bus I would elect the external drive workflow. Also, you can get a relatively inexpensive FW800 external raid for a bit of protection of your valuable media where the internal drive is a single drive.

Silly Idea..
Can I use this new iMac(with it's high resolution) as a field monitor?

Better get a Sony triniton broadcast monitor. They are on sale on fleabay from time to time.
And if that's to heavy: you can get an IKAN HD for less than an iMac. The problem with this flatscreens is color depth though.

Nice, I was hoping they'd make the imacs better, might have to pick one up.

The internal drive is SATA so it's faster.
Remember guys not to confuse maximum bus speed (Available bandwidth) with minimum sustainable HD read/write speed (attainable bandwidth). Reddrives are stripped raid 0 drives with a FW800 i/o, meaning you'll probably get speeds of above 70 MBytes/s.
Internal drives are connected with sata, but they still have speeds generally below 50MB/s, even the new 1TB drives aren't much higher. If your maximum i/o is the FW800, i'd get one with the FW800 G-tech minis and stripe 2x 750GB drives (the fastest read/write). That should get you throughput of about the maximum of FW800 (100MB/s). Faster than the internal drive, fast enough to edit redcode (so we're told (sorry about all the ()s)), and for under $800.

The reason for asking, anyway I have to carry some computer (be it Macbook/iMac) for off-loading to HardDisk, why not use the same as Field Monitor.
Curios to know what can go wrong.

The glossy screen might work against you there. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice screen, but very reflective, even with the antiglare coating.

Agreed, we have non-glossy version also available.
What else can go wrong..
I am trying to carry small package, Field Monitor+Backup+Field Preview+Simple editing.

You could use it to playback of your recorded footage, but as far as live monitoring--AFAIK on the iMac there is no DVI in even in a pass-through mode--just a DVI out for a second monitor. There is no way that you could use an iMac as a live monitor that I can see.
For onset 1080p monitoring, the way I'm planning to do it so far is with just a 24" cinema display and a HDLink (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hdlink/) Then, for playback use a Macbook pro and you could even connect it then to the cinema display. So far, the camera outputs 1080 through HD-SDI and that is the max live monitoring you will be able to do so a 30" would just be bigger--it wouldn't be 2K.

No there isn't a non-glossy version, they did drop it this time.

Are you talking about the older iMacs? With this one, "whether you want it to be or not, it's always glossy."

New iMac specs: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
Looks like video out only supports mirroring, *sigh*. One of these days they'll put a beefy graphics card in there.

Nope, you misread:
Support for external display in extended desktop mode
Digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200
Analog resolutions up to 2048 by 1536
Support for external display in video mirroring mode

Dropped in to my favourite reseller yesterday. These new iMacs look stunning in person. Gorgeous and so thin... must... wipe... out these covetous thoughts as I already have a Mac tower! :waaa:

Quick question, if I bought an Imac today do I need to purchase the leopard upgrade in October as well? Or do they include a free upgrade when it's released? Windows for example offered free Vista upgrades on PC's bought a few months before the release. I couldn't see on apples website from a quick glance, anyone have any ideas?

In the past, they offered a $19.95 upgrade for those who purchased a computer something like 30 days before.
IMO, if you really don't want to pay $129 for Leopard when it comes out, wait 'til its released before purchasing your new mac.

Cheers Dominique, that's the point really. I don't need the mac right now and if it means it comes with a bit more stuff and I don't have to bother with installing it come October then i might as well wait. Does anyone know the date that leopard ships?

The date hasn't been announced yet, official word is "this october".
Apple will either make an announcement that Leopard is shipping, or they will announce they will ship in x days. If the latter comes true my guess is there will be, like in the past, a big countdown on apple.com.
Is this your first Mac? I am, too, very interested in this machine, probably the top of the line, gorgeous 24"...

No. But It'd be my first in a few years. I owned the bondai blue imac way back when.
