I seem to remmember the dynamic range was officially 11.3 stops. Then there was that whole engineering delay. Now I'm thinking its higher, but I have no idea by how much. Or maybe I'm crazy.

In any case I'm looking to know the dynamic range of the production cameras. Anybody know?

I read it was at 12 stops. Not sure if it's 12-stops of dynamic range or latitude... thusly here showing my lack of knowledge. :)

It was 11.3 stops on Frankie - the original prototype. Much has changed since then, but we don't really know. Qualifying dynamic range with numbers is just not an easy thing to do as there is no true benchmark. Some people will say 3, some will say 12, some will say 329.642.

That said...

“We’re shooting RED side by side film. We scanned the film 4k and took both into the Baselight, compared them and then did a filmout of both. When we screened side by side, we literally could not tell the difference. In fact, most people picked the RED footage as film because of a greater dynamic range in the highlights than in the 5218. It’s not enough to say it is the best digital image out there. ?The fact is, finally, we can intercut digital with film. It looked remarkably better than the filmed images. I thought I would never be able to say that”

So yeah, it apparently has a greater dynamic range than 5218.

ehhh.. ok.

I was just looking for a fun little number to throw out there to potential clients. Truth is, the number doesn't matter as long as the camera performs beautifully in bright sunlight. I'd like to see some footage from a wooded area on a cloudless day, that would answer all questions.
