My brother is down at Siggraph with a motion capture system he has developed:
http://www.naturalpoint.com/optitrack/
and ran into someone with a "Red Chief Designer" badge on. Word is the first 50 Reds will be "shipping in about a month" with more to follow soon after. So it sounds like the date may have slipped a little, but not by much. Thought all of you would appreciate the info.

Maybe Graeme? I'm sure someone on the board would have a guess.

Guys,
With all the upfront delivery data do you trust what is being released here by the Red team or a rumour from an unsubstantiated source? I'm amazed that you actually worded your post in that maaner. But that's what makes an individual.
Or.... have got it all wrong and this is actually one of those 'official' leaks that allows the government a soft option on releasing bad news... ummm interesting.

Today is August 9. The last estimated ship date for the first 50 RED given was August 30. 30 minus 9 = 21 days, which is "about a month", thus IMO that's not any indication that the shipping date has slipped at all.

We are currently planning to ship the 1st 50 cameras by the end of the month. Things can slip, maybe the next 100 will slip... we don't know. But we aren't planning on that happening. A lot depends on how these 1st 50 cameras act when we fire them up. :-)

Great footage, good to know. I just ordered all what you have to sell in your shop (well actually it doesn't work, talked to Kelly) and for that reason, the next 100 can't slip, the next .... I waaaaaaaaant my REEEEEEEEEEED...... :whistling:

That's good news. I know they are mixing film and RED. Can you give us any details on how the cameras are being used. Just for VFX or for everything?

Jeezus H. Christ on a sidecar. That system's incredible value...I might just pick one up for previs.

Mocap for $5K? It's definitely got my interest...

Yeah, very cool... could it be the RED pricing/value philosophy applied to motion capture?
I used a guy who had one of those crappy exo-skeleton style suits a couple years ago... an absolutely worthless day wasted watching him twitch around in the thing...
This looks much better....

Your brother is part of NaturalPoint? Cool - I have a TrackIR - essential for flightsim gaming!

mocap technology is changing so fast right now. I can't believe how crowded the field is. But at $5k that's tough to beat. I've got my eye on XSense Moven system as a fast easy, trackerless mocap system that I want to use. Unfortunately it's not that cheap. With all the competition, maybe prices will drop.

You're in Chicago, Jim? Damn! I'm only 2 hours south of you right now. Wish you would have set up a footage demo. I've been dying to see "Crossing the Line". Oh well, if you come back within the next couple months give it a thought. Thanks!

Thanks for posting back so quickly Jim. I can't even tell you how excited I was when my bro told me he ran into some of the Red guys and passed along the "about a month" or "within a month" or "within THE month" or whatever the quote actually was (looks like "within THE month" is most accurate, to Gibby's point). I guess I always had this worry in the back of my mind that it was all too good to be true. But to hear that info from such a direct source was exciting. I have my piggy bank all full, ready to spend on Red come December/January.
Glad some of you liked the MoCap system. He has been getting a lot of buzz down at Siggraph due to the incredible price point for a full fledged mocap system. I told him about Red way back when I first got my reservation and I'm sure we'll be doing some tests and demos with the Red and his mocap system together when I get my camera later this year. Can't wait!
