I was shooting a spot last week. It was a simple shoot with a low budget (for a spot), and one of the consequences was that we skimped on a continuity person. The director kept yelling "circle that" at the end of good takes, and then following up with, "oops, I keep forgetting we don't have continuity."

What if one of the user buttons could be programmed to "circle that". I'm not sure exactly what that would mean, but somehow, there could be metadata added that caused the shot folder to be a different color, or something could be added to the file name, etc. I'd leave it to the folks at RED to figure out what would make it a circled take.

Since uncircling could be complicated, I'd vote that you'd need to hit the button two or three times, consecutively, within 30 seconds of the takes end to circle it--something to keep takes from getting circled by accident.

What ya'll think?

Sound recording devices have been doing this for a long time by using a CSV or other internal shot tracking system to mark good takes - no reason EPIC/SCARLET can't do the same. Hell, the Cantar will put a nicely formatted PDF of the sound report on a firewire drive along with BWF files for post. RED ONE may not have the horsepower internally, though...

Great Idea!!!
Circling a take is not only for continuity, it comes from the film print for dailies (rushes in some countries) when you didn't want to print everything including NG takes.
There were three categories at that time Good, No Good and Hold.
I just wander if you can make directors make decisions on the spot as they are used now in some projects to "print" everything.

I pray be able to "circle" a take via wifi from REDMOTE.

And "un-circling" or circling a take AFTER the media has been downloaded during review is NO PROBLEM if you are writing this to an XML side-car file in the RDC folder.
