I was wondering if the epson p5000 could be used to store the red footage, and if so because of the screen could it be upgraded to use it as a viewer as well
any thoughts?

it doesn't seem like a great fit as this product seems designed for still viewing more than video. the 5000 model only has an 80gb drive. not terrible but there are larger solutions out there. the screen is sd resolution with support for only mpeg-4, motion jpeg and divx so that's not too useful either.

This may be a less expensive alternative. You could back up an 8GB CF card 15 times on this out in the field. Anyone have any experience using this or the Epson P5000 for offloading Red footage shot on CF's out in the field?

Digital Foci Picture Porter Elite 120GB Picture Viewer.

If anyone knows of a cheaper/better solution, please let me know.

According to the website, "Copies 1 full 1GB CF card in under 5 minutes." So, an 8GB card would copy in something less than 40 minutes. Dunno, doesn't sound very practical.
