Best DSLR?

Does anyone know what the best DSLR out there is for dynamic range and color fidelity? I have heard that the Nikon D40x is hard to beat unless you are spending more than 2K (I would rather not spend that much). Any insight would be helpful.

The Fuji S3/S5 are both under 2k and they are definitely contenders. The S5 is the same chip but in a newer body.

The numbers I heard are 12.3 stops DR, with excellent color fidelity. The compromise is in the resolution, as its really just a 6 mpxl camera that interpolates up to 12.

S3 should be a lot cheaper now, because its outdated.
