View Full Version : RED case design

I was doing something in 3d and RED case design idea came to me so I let it out. It was total fun and here’s what I came up with.

One of the cool features is shock absorption with case’s 8 shock absorbers (4 on each side), which can protrude out for stronger impact protection (for situations like throwing luggage at the airport).

Along with capturing RED’s “feel” the design is meant:
- To look wild but serious
- To seem creative but strong
- To look powerful at first sight
- To seem futuristic & next gen
- To definitely leave an impression where ever you show up

Motifs

-Handle – Red grip and rails
-3 Ribs under the handle – motif from the first silver prototypes displayed at Nab 2006 + symbolism
-Shock absorbers design– RED cage
-Air vents motif – same as cam's

Symbolism

- 3 ribs under the handle – symbolizing RGB
- 4 stripes on the sides – 4k resolution
- 12 holes on shock absorbers – 12 bit data

Protection

- impact protection with shock absorbers
- fingerprint reader lock (cheap to implement)
- GPS locator module (BTO option)

Are you taking orders? With a design like this I think you may have to hire security :shiftyph34r: Looks GOOOOOD!

Case is beautiful Omen. Excellent graphics.

Would also be a great marketing/advertising product for Red's camera.

Couple of thoughts:

- Design the handle so that it could to be reused on camera.
- Make the outer protection shell of impact rubber that could be removed.

Cheers,

You should take out a patent on them. They look practical and solid. And don't forget the wheels.

I like those security measures. But even with the best shock protection I still wouldn't trust my RED to any airport baggage handlers. But a GPS unit built into the case would be sweet!

If this is a serious project, defiantly design the case with holes for zip ties for the cases where you don't want to lock the case.

The problem with finger print lock is:
1.) Homeland security may want to get into the case
2.) When renting or having an assistant working with the case.

Would it be possible to have removable graphics/logos? I worry about advertising the expensive contents of the case to all potential sticky fingers.

The biggest problem I see with the design... The corners and the protruding pieces will catch or snag on just about anything.

If this is to evolve into a serious project -- Taking it through airport security in the Americas and several other places, any locks would need to allow for TSA access. This, IMO, is a security risk to the contents of the case nearly everywhere else (and during air travel). I have yet to see a TSA lock that couldn't be be easily pried open or picked in a matter of seconds. Definitely include holes or other means to lock/secure the case when outside of airport security situations.

Looks cool though.

Looks hot. Does it come with its own set of launch codes?

Very well done. It goes with the whole RED revolution and design. Keep up the good work. I would buy this case indeed.

That's a sweet look case. Maybe a little bit too sweet. For me it just screams way to loudly, "Hey, expensive sh*t in here. Please steal me.":shiftyph34r:

Is it possible to insure checked baggage in such a way that the airlines would actually take responsibility for it and treat it well? I presume not, but maybe I'm wrong.

Hi,

You will need your own insurance policy, make sure the equipment is covered whilst 'unattended' and that insurance covers any countries you intend to visit.

With this design you will visit the nice beaches of Guantanamo Bay.

The handle looks a little bit shallow. Get some guy with beefy knuckles, he won't like the case too much. Looks cool, but I guess I would rather have a traditional hard case.

Looks dope but if I see one of these at the airport I'll grab it and run for the nearest exit. Maybe something a bit less conspicuous- stealthy?

Yeah... I'll get a case that says: "worthless crap"... I'll probably adapt an older hard case and put some crappy old stickers on... You'll only be able to tell it's my Red by noticing the lock is made of titanium.

I would also add WATER PROOF/RESISTANT. Like pelican cases. This, to me is the most important thing.

Lovely design I must say, you put a lot of good work into that.

One criticism I would make about the case - the first thing a thief will take when braking into my place/wherevere RED happens to be at the time would be that red case, because of how it sleek it looks.

This is the beauty of the pelican case. It's already ugly to start off with, and the more it gets battered about the more secure it gets ;):)

Excellent design work, Omen! But I have to agree with the others that are concerned about theft. I'll be putting mine in the most crappy looking case I can find.

But don't let that stop you from following through with this design! I'm sure many here would buy one in a heartbeat simply based on looks. That is one hot piece of luggage!

Keith Alan Morris
08-14-2007, 08:41 PM
design a backpack/carry-on version and i want one. my Red will never leave my sight during travel. and theres no way i'm putting something that nice looking underneath. if i didnt have one and i saw it coming around the carousel--whether i knew about Red or not--i'd be too tempted to just SNATCH it!

Thanks for the nice words, guys.

The problem with finger print lock is:
1.) Homeland security may want to get into the case

Dual lock would take care of that. A standard one and additional fingerprint reader lock. When needed, just set to "standard lock only".

2.) When renting or having an assistant working with the case.

Depending on the model, with fingerprint locks you can save more users and have access control. And no, you don't have to worry about someone cutting your finger off because the sensor detects the skin temperature. This technology isn't SF any more.

The biggest problem I see with the design... The corners and the protruding pieces will catch or snag on just about anything.

Well, the shock absorbers are meant to move in and out. You could retract them to the body - I was under the impression I made that apparent. My bad.

Looks great! But does it have to look like a X-Box?
I agree with the other guys, it will get more attention than it should in public. But it's a very cool design and great 3D work with the renders.

I was just about to say that it looked like an XBox. So I looked through the whole thread. I was saying, looks like nobody said it. Then I saw your post which was the last one!

Probably best to reduce the size to carry on. My luck with checked equipment and TSA has not been good. After they damaged my equipment it took a congressman who intervened and about a year to get our money. They put the AC power block on top of the screen and closed the case with cords hanging out!

Gotta agree with some of the other posters - it looks cool but it's WAY too much of a target for theft.

I'll be going with the ugliest (sturdy) case I can find. Most likely I'll get a new Pelican, bury it in the ground for a couple days, and then slap on some duck tape.

Zakaree Sandberg

"biohazard.. fecal matter study, open at own risk" sticker should do the trick.

Zakaree Sandberg
08-17-2007, 02:55 PM
just thought of something.. buy the super rad red case that looks like griff tannens pitbull hoverboard case. and put fecal matter in it.. then with your pelican that actually claims fecal matter study put the camera in.. so you will have an awesome decoy.. someone will jack your griff tannen case thinking a shiny new red is inside.. and instead its a bag of asses.. you will get out alive with your red.

Craig Meadows
08-17-2007, 04:43 PM
I agree that it screams "RED hot expensive camera inside...steal me". I would prefer a sleeper, anonymous case with all the mentioned security features.

Mark Thorpe

Seems like most people are thinking the design will decide the fate of the case. So if that be true then every camera should resemble a Hi8 super cam to avoid being stolen? I reckon some people would use cases such as this for transport within the country, coz it looks damn sexy, and then transfer to 'fecal containers' for long haul trips.

haha, several of the comments here had me laughing.

I want a really cool case that screams "this is expensive," I just won't use that for long trips, but for my own shoots where I'm using the camera, heck yeah, it's tight.

Maybe it could be the same case, have the sexy RED case with a clip on poo smeared/biohazard shell. That way its the same secure case that you can just dress up or down depending on where you are traveling. Imagine gazing at the beat up case coming around the baggage carousel knowing that a sexy design marvel is only a few millimetres under the surface, with no one else any the wiser. :shifty:

I have friends that do this with their wardrobe. It's the GHETTO/GECKO technique. Ghetto for the Saturday night rock show, Gecko (as in Gordon) for the Sunday dinner with the girlfriend's parents.

I'm thinking a Pelican 1510 (largest approved for carry-on) stuffed into a dirty, funky fabric duffel-bag or gym-bag for disguise. Maybe gym-sweat aroma would help.

You are looking at over 500,000.00 is tooling.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Moulds and plastic compounds.

........................

I see a lot of fear about theft. I don't leave my equipment unattended.
If this was a real project you could avoid your fears with GPS tracking BTO anyway, as it was mentioned.

........................

I'm not making a RED case. Guess I should have put a disclaimer.
If it's going to be made RED should make and design it.
This was just practice and letting some ideas out. Read the first line of the first post again.

Those corners gonna snag, uh... screams to be stolen. Pelican and Storm all the way. Cardboard and duct/gaffers tape on my Red camera to boot. I could care less about looking cool, having tight gear, etc..

Just because you ARE a character doesn't mean you HAVE character.

Are you serious?! You'd put tape all over your camera? Wow, yikes, I wouldn't let anyone even put a sticker on the thing. I want my equipment to look nice and sleek and damage-free for as long as possible.

Yeah I'll make sure it wont get sticky or anything. I just want it to look like some third-world sh*t. I don't want to be noticed, I don't want it stolen, I don't want people cheering "RED" like that story Mike Curtis wrote about.

I'm gonna be shooting some scenes of an improvised feature film in some places that we need permission, and we don't have it. But you are allowed to bring touristy type stuff in these places so I am going to try my best to make the Red look like no big deal.. You know like I am some tourist with an old POS of a camera...
