Given a budget of around 20k for lenses, would you recommend getting the red prime set or getting the 18-50mm and the 50-150mm lenses that red offers. What do you think would be the better investment when shooting commercials and films?

Depends on your shooting style, if you always have a truck full of lights around get the zooms, if you plan on mostly moody interiors, the primes for sure. Are you into super wide shots? gotta go with primes (15mm) are you a tele guy? Zooms, or just the 300 2.8. Seriously though, if your able to get $20K together is it so hard to add an extra $10K and just get the whole shebang?

Hi Eric,

I shoot mainly commercials, I would go with primes, obviously I have not been able to test any of Red's lenses so it's an educated guess. I like to shoot wider than 2.8 even if my focus pullers would rather I didn't.

Depends on what you like and your clients want. Historically good quality primes seem to be a better investment than zooms.

Nobody has battle-tested any of these lenses so it would not be a bad idea to hang back a bit and see.

Wait.

Until you can rent them out and test them by yourself. Lenses are a very personal thing. Job, taste, handling.

I would never buy a lens with out testing them personally. Different to the RED ONE.
