My wife and I use that exact drive at home as media storage spillover for home photos and movies. It works great, looks nice, and is quiet. Plus as you've already discovered it is cheap. Ours is definitely not in a "production" environment at home, but I've always found WD's bare drives to be reliable in the past at work as well.

thanks! then we're buying two at the office here to back up tons of big graphic files, no video.

i hope it works in a production environ for my own video needs when i get some for myself down the road...

We have used it in a production enviroment, It has taken the abuse really well. Much more than I can say for our LaCie drives

For backup, this is great. For production, I doubt that USB2.0 can keep up with the data rates required (for HD and larger).

I have had the firewire die on two of these drives as well. The usb did keep working though. I had another friend who had the firewire die on his right out of the box. Seems like they have an issue to address...
