I'm often in situations when I'm shooting where I would like to reference the composition of some footage that was shot in the past. For instance I've been working on a documentary for the last 2 years and have done countless interviews all over the globe. Often there are weeks (even months) in between shooting so I don't always remember exactly what the last interview looked like... I usually just email some screen grabs to my iphone so I can reference it, but it's a pain in the ass and I often forget.

I think it'd be amazing if you could take high resolution screen grabs from the Red and store them into a usb thumb drive (or internal memory on future cameras).

You could have many different thumb-drives (or internal memory folders) that were dedicated to individual projects (or scenes) so you could always reference them on set and on the Red LCD (or out of HD-SDI to a bigger monitor) right before you shoot.

Also, would it be possible to overlay the still image over the live image and then shift opacity back and forth so you could see the differences in composition, color and lighting. Or alternatively chose to put both images up on the screen right next to each other... or half and half full screen... essentially what you do when you're grading and trying to match a two shots.

Perhaps there could be a "stamp" function when selected could write in text on the still image metadata. EG: focal length, f-stop, color/contrast, or what ever red menu settings you want to see.

I guess this idea is sort of like a DP's personal VTR playback (except with stills).

This would be great for blocking and matching eye lines too. You could have dozens of screen grabs to scroll through really quickly to see exactly what you shot that day or on that project.

Yes, I'll often do a globe-trotting commercial or corporate film where we interview many, many different people, and it's really hard to maintain consistency throughout a project. I'll take some still photos but having afeature like this would really be great.
As a sidebar, a few years ago I asked the boys at Panasonic to include this as a feature on the LH-900 monitor, which I would consider my digital lightmeter these days. They didn't get it ("so, you'd like to be able to save 6 or 7 still frames to some sort of internal memory? That will REALLY drive up the cost") They could not see that having it save to a thumb drive or SD card might be useful. The need for more than "6 or 7" was lost on them too...
Oh well...
Cheers,
H.

Haha, I've got that monitor as well and I also use it kind of like a lightmeter.

You can save screen grabs to the Panasonic BT-LH2600, except you can only capture half a screen and you can't save it long term... as soon as you exit that mode or turn off the monitor the still image is lost. It's like a quarter baked idea.... they were onto something great and then dropped the ball.

Anyway, this feature would be really helpful and seems like it would be a very easy one to implement.
