Polaris

Is there any of the 100 first camera owners (delivery before 15.September) that are willing to sell their Red-camera (just the camera) for 30.000$ ? And waituntil February for their camera, since I have my delivery then?
We are shooting a film late September.

I'll warn that this may not be looked kindly upon by Red. We are of course free to do anything you want with your Reds once you take delivery, but I think most here would recomend you rent from an early reservation holder instead of paying to cut in line. Almost all here know the early reservation camreas could easily net that amount in rentals by Febuary.

Wow, your going to loose alot when buying a $17.500 camera for $30.000.
Did you really think this through? Why don't you use the money on film and rent an Arriflex or something? Or rent Genesis? I mean... in the meantime you are waiting for your camera, you could use alot of other options with that kind of money...

You may be able to rent a RED body from someone until your camera arrives in Feb. But it may cost you a little bit more then $12,500 though. ($30k-$17.5k)

Shooting 4 weeks, the cost of renting a Arri (+ negative) would be more than 12.500. So this would be nice forme, and nice for the person waiting 4 months...

Hmmm, maybe Red would not have a problem if existing numbered red rez holders wanted to swap as opposed to non rez holders or non numbered rez trying to jump in?
Instead of selling outright, charge a swapping fee or something.
Just a thought, and some sort of paperwork requirement from Red wouldn't be out of line.

I am wondering why RED would give a damn no matter who is trying to jump in or 'skip the line' or whatever. I mean, if someone buys a camera from them, they can sell it whenever they want, either the day they get it, or two years down the road, or whenever.
Seems odd that there would be ANY backlash from people about this. I mean really, why do you give a damn, and why would RED?

Hi,
They used the reservations to gauge demand, they did not want to encourage a secondary market in 'options', they made the deposit fully refundable instead.

Part of Red philosophy was pricing that put it out of range of the prosumer crowd, but relatively affordable for the true pro crowd. Red is actively trying to avoid rampant speculation and profiteering. Until the camera actually ships, that is their right to do so. Once you own it, do what you want.
My suggestion about a swapping fee was to continue to honor those who took a chance and put their money down before Red became the "IT" camera.
That's part of what being an existing rez holder means, like it or not.

I think Red would be happy to see someone cashing in on their foresight on getting in line early. And I think Red would also be happy to see someone who NEEDs the camera by a certain date being able to get their hands on one.
Because they could have held back say the first 50 or 100 and sold them at a higher price or auctioned them off but they wanted to One, be evenhanded to everyone. Second, they know that it creates a little bit of a bonus for the early adopters to be able to get a number of good rentals at prices near other cameras in its quality range (like the F900.)
Why would we care? Granted there is absolutely nothing LEGALLY to stop you from selling your RED want you take delivery and title. I recently turned down 30K to purchase red #206, mainly because I believe their is a bit of a spirit to the REDUSER community that I didn't want to violate. But I do hope to make some income between the beginning of October when I receive my red and the beginning of december when I am planning a shoot. You would be undermining that to some extent.

This is a great offer. I'd jump all over it if I had a low number.

in general : look at this from a different POV instead of so practical POV ..
if one is shooting a project and wants the image to be a "certain quality " then one has to pay the price for that image ...
Polaris knows how much the RED cost - the camera isn't available so what are they going to use instead and how much is that going to cost ...
Polaris has thought about it and it is worth 30K to get the 4k image...
so all this loosing X $ etc doesn't matter - the image coming from the RED in todays market is worth more then the cost of the camera ( no if's and's or butt's ) = this is where you look at the other camera's out there and see what they are costing ... so does Polaris rent/buy a cineAlta ? Arri D20 , Viper ? any way you look the at the other camera's - 30k is still a deal ...

This is a fair offer and I don't see a problem with it. And by now it's probably already sealed anyway.

How about $100K? That's under $28 a day for the next ten years ;)

We would also offer several $.$$$ more than the list prices for a red one, delivered before the ones we bought. We simply donīt have enough hdcam cameras right now for all the productions going on and have to rent additional ones for $.$$$ a month. That is normal business, buying and selling cameras. But - red made clear that selling reservation numbers is, for good reasons, nothing they will allow.
