View Full Version : STAGE FIVE: R1 to M-X upgrade only

Stage five: R1 to M-X upgrade only.
Let's say I'm a pirate (voided R1 warranty installing unsupported lens mount...)
that means I do not fit at all in the first three STAGES
because of the status that made eligible to trade my R1 in on an Epic system.
So I can see my chance that is to get in the STAGE FOUR but later when this is available.
Now I would like to ask for the STAGE FIVE that means mostly as a fast and easy upgrade of R1 to M-X sensor for $4500.
Do I have chance to get in that stage (because I voided R1 warranty)?
When this option (or stage) will be available?

Dear Sanjin,
You are indeed a pirate. We respect that. We admire you for that.
No stages for you at all.
Sorry.

Dear Medavoym,
first, we need here a real name policy...
Second, my questions were not addressed to you that means your answer is still not valid till somebody officially from RED confirm the same.
Btw, dear Medavoym, let you know I'm pretty good and loyal RED customer that already spent in RED store almost $50000
or $49614 by my last calculation but actually they should know even better what's the exact figure...
So, to repeat again I would like to drop $4500 there and get M-X on RED1 #694.

Hi Sanjin,
Did you buy any RED lense? without I can't understand how you have spent so much at RED for 1? camera.

Why is option 2 not available to you..?
Keep your modified red (your definitely in the Red hardcore) and get a Epic as well with a great price incentive?

There is lots of ways to spend money with Red not including lenses. IF he's bought 3 red rams, 1 rocket, Evf, 7" monitor and a sensible amount of batteries he would be close to that figure easily..

Hi,
I'm back now.
first I do not want to make now any pressure to RED that give to me M-X sensor upgrade
if this case at the moment do not cover their policy in terms of (temporary) business rules just because my R1 anyway voided warranty.
Would be nice even if I would get it later (but for sure) after all those four stages were initiated.
And I would like to know it ASAP.
It's important to know that (even if I'm "recognized" here as a bloody "pirate", "arrogant" and "impolite") have my strong commitment
("spiritually" as a RED User and financially like a good RED customer) to RED project was working or not for me.
Btw, if you would like to know I do have purchased from RED store the following items:
RED ONE Body, RED EVF+2x cables, 4xCF cards, RED Drive 320GB, RED Drive 640GB (still in back order), eSata cables 2x, 1x LCD 5.6",
LCD cables 2x, Base production pack, 2xPower Pack(2xcharges, 4xbatteries)+cables, RED battery belt plate,
RED Quick plate (now old), AC adapter, ET/RED Arri base 15mm (now old),
15mm adaptor, RED quick plate, RED top mount 2x, BNC to DIN 3x, Universal mount, Handle mount, Focus Hook, Body cap,
Lens rear cap 3x, RED Rocket™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™ card, RED Camera Pelican Case, some of RED T-shirts and stickers,
and plus paid $2500 for RED Repair Fee that was free for others (CF module, i/pins, etc,... inner body cleaning included...).
Maybe something little is missing here but that is more or less all...

The only way I can possibly see Red rejecting your camera is if you decided to swap for an Epic and pay the difference.
But that's just me...

Sanjin,
Why not do as Michael suggests and go with stage 2, you keep your RED and get 8500$ off, then your RED will be marked as executed at RED without them even taking it in. (and technically it is not a trade-in, as you keep your RED).

Eirik,
simply by the rules (see above) I do not fit in to the stage two.
Also I can somehow fit into the stage four anyway... but in that's case I'm like all other brand new EPIC purchasers,
maybe have in this case a bit better position because I can use some of R1 accessories, CF cards, RED Drives, LCD, EVF, batteries,...

I think you do; the text talks about trading in, i.e. returning your R1 body to Red, for them to do with as they wish.
Under option 2, you are not trading in your Red body, rather keeping it for yourself. I suspect that a lot of Red 1s end up being used as 'projects' by those opting for Stage One or Two.
Anyway, I asked the question on the main feedback thread.

Sanjin, methinks Stage 2 is where it's at for you. Hope you get the email from the Bomb Squad for it. Your R1 is still a RED, IMS mount or not.
Mr. Land? Any comments?

I, too, would think you qualify for stage 2. You are an original owner and you are not trading it in and don't need to send it in.
Of course, if you are just after the upgrade then it doesn't matter if you qualify for stage 2 or not.

I see no reason why you wouldnt be able to upgrade your sensor..
I do.
Who is supposed to re-install the IMS mount that was custom installed by the folks @ PS teknic and voided the warranty?
I think that Sanjin would have to get the mount the R1 shipped with on the camera and then "maybe" he could ask RED to make an exception.
I'm not sure they will as they were pretty specific on this and made a clear example of Sanjin when he installed the mount. They let it be known that IMS was not going to be an option for R1 owners (and interestingly have offered their own take on interchanable mounts with EPIC)
I also think that the better route would be to send a letter to Jarred and ask them if they might consider that you made a mistake and maybe they could let you in on the upgrade program.
I do not think that the public forums is the correct place to build support for this idea.
I think that Sanjin has been a fantastic contributor to this forum and that he is indeed a supporter of and investor in RED.
In the end there is a right way to approach this and I am not sure this thread is the right way.

Thanks Kreisky,
when I went there I had a big hope for all of us to get interchangeable mount option for R1 but unfortunately didn't work.
Just to remind us now on my sort of a "R1 pirate developer" step at the end of March 2008:

Yeah, it's a good alternative mount option for everybody pro or amateur RED1 user, but I can't "advertise" it any more here because already costs me a lot...
BTW, one of my favorite English (punk) rock band is CLASH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clash).

I guess maybe it is the language difference, but trade-in to me means to send in your camera to RED in exchange for the discount on the Epic(-X in stage 4, S35 in stage 4). If you used stage 2, you aren't trading in anything.
Probably best to call into RED and ask them.

The whole upgrade program, whether you send your camera in or not, was designed as a thank you and reward for those of us that struggled through the early days of Red development and supported them.
Anyone who hasn't been under a rock for the last three years can clearly see that Sanjin is one of Reds most fervent supporters, emotionally and financially.
Regardless of warranty red tape he is clearly a supporter and should be treated like the rest of us early adopters.

Same here Sanjin... good luck. I think you definitely deserve to be in Stage Two. You are not sending in your camera so what difference does it make if the warranty is voided. You are one of the most active users on here and a major RED supporter... if you don't deserve a $8500 credit then no one does.

although I can only speak for myself, I think we all have learned a great deal from you, through your tireless search for accessories, gadgets and workflows and your tests. It takes a true afficionado like you to pull this through!
If there ever was anybody outside the mainstream movie industry to deserve extra credit from RED, it would be you.

I can't really say it any better than Ryan already has, so hear, hear!!
Add my voice to those saying Sanjin deserves to get at least the Stage 2 option, if not preferential option to be among the first to upgrade to the Red One M-X sensor (since he has no other option if Red refuses to allow one of the other stages).
Best of luck with it Sanjin!

Paul,
thank you for your support.
If I can't get at the stages 1,2 and 3 then I should be a partly "pardoned" and then get at least R1 to M-X upgrade
as an early reservation holder, big RED supporter and very strong RED defender here.
The "only" punishment could be that I'm at the stage 4 anyway.
But let not push so much buttons at RED because of me and my case in this busy moment.
With a great hope that maybe at the end everything will be fine.

Read the announcement again, the wording is specific. If you choose to keep your R1, you aren't trading in anything. There is no reason based on the actual wording of the announcement that a warranty voided R1 would be an issue for Stage 2 so long as you are the first or second owner prior to the 29th.

Andrew,
I read it many times but also there could be possibility for some different interpretations of warranty issue (!!??).
But what you've said that would be great.
