Not yet, I think they are hoping many people will keep their original camera as a back up camera.

I'm sure they would if the new sensor upgrade was $995 :)
That would eleminate a warehouse full of used Red trade ins and more cash buyers for Epic.

Why would you keep the original camera? Why would you not trade it in and just buy another brand new RED ONE, with another full warranty.

Exactly. Thank you Darren for driving the Semi-Truck through the vast chasm of the logic void. You are my new hero.

Darren,
Because that would cost you approx. 9.000 USD extra. (If you take the value of all the modules included in the trade-in, you end up with the R1 being valued at about 8.500, give or take.)

Chip,
You ask a very good question. I'm wondering if they're going to re-condition the trade ins and sell them as refurbished, much like what Apple does with their computers. I know there are obvious advantageous to having the new sensors (less noise, 5k, etc.), but I don't really need it. If they ever sell refurbished Red Ones from the trade ins, at a discounted rate, I'd be game for that.
Anyone else?

My bet is they hope to lure us in with stage 2. With the folks that do stage 3, I assume they will upgrade the sensor then resell them as Red One M-X refurbs for $17,500 or so.

Huh?
The only difference I see between stage 2 and 3 is the 5" screen vs the 2.8" screen. A price difference that is 700 dollars. It makes complete sense to wait for stage 3, then buy a brand new RED ONE once you trade it in your old one, if you really want to keep it. Again a long term thing here, anyone who seriously wants to keep the RED ONE should wait for stage 3 and get a new one with full warranty. Some people have had their cameras for almost two years. Spend X dollar in stage 2 get one new camera, spend almost the same X dollar in stage 3 get new new cameras. You can buy a new car and keep your old one, or trade in your old car and get two new cars, one of them almost free....I'd take the second option.
