Perhaps someone can help?

My Mac Book Pro has been running extremely hot (115'F and even up to 150'F sometimes), and a lot of the time this is not even when I am doing intensive projects. I have even come back and woken it up to find the bottom just blazing hot. I remember a few months back a friend of mine having this issue as well. He ended up getting a cooling pad to put beneath the Laptop...

There are also programs you can get like smcFan Control and Cool Book, which allow you to monitor the temp, boost the fans, and even adjust voltage of your CPU. smc Fan control has helped a tiny bit... but this does not seem right.

When I research the problem, there are a lot of people online that state the same issue. Can anyone here help me out? Brook, perhaps?

Are some units defective? Or are these Mac Books just designed this way?

I'm afraid to leave it sit unsupervised.

I use a an active cooling pad under mine, helps greatly. Mine runs 24/7, at night it becomes a render node. The fans aren't too loud... I use it on the set as well.

A friend's Macbook Pro actually got so hot it warped the battery, so something like this is necessary, IMO.

i'm not a Mac'er
i did just work with a editor on one of my projects .... he had his mac laptop ( 17" pro) mounted so that the back was approx 4-5" off the desk so it would help stay cool ... across the hall was another editor on same model Mac and he had a cooler unit with fans under his mac .... they both said the laptops run Hot ...

I wonder how apple was able to get these units FCC approved with dangerous heat problems like this...

How hot is too hot to run them at?

I also think there was an issue with the original core duo's and the newer core 2 duo's run cooler... all I know is mine (original core duo) runs on the active cooling pad and all has been well in the heat this summer... knock on wood...

I did some more research and it is well documented on the apple forums about heat issues, which have led to many people's batteries warping as well as the intense heat causing shutdowns and various crashes.

I am going to call apple tomorrow to find out if my battery is on a recall list. Some others have said they were swapped out batteries at the apple store, so it must be a known issue.

For now, I certainly won't trust leaving it on when I'm not around. Most people seemed to say they "woke up to a warped battery" or that they opened the MacBook Pro out of a sleep mode and it was extremely hot and / or shutdown.

Here's another article from Engaget that shows pictures of warped batteries and explains in further detail:

I was having battery problems and got my battery replaced... it helped a lot.
It was bad - don't know what came first - heat or battery problem - but with a new battery it is much better.

I am using SMCfan and it dramatically helped. I had been running 140 degrees - so hot that I could even touch the mouse pad. It now stays around 100 degrees and the worktop isn't even hot.
